COMMENDATIONS: Commends the North Central High School boys' basketball team on
winning the 2019 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 1A state
championship
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend the North Central High School boys' basketball team upon winning the 2019
3 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 1A state championship.
4 WHEREAS, riding the wave of a regular season wins-losses record of 31-6, the
5North Central High School Hurricanes won three straight games in the Louisiana High
6School Athletic Association Class 1A state tournament to gain the school's first
7championship in boys' basketball at Marsh Madness 2019 in Lake Charles' Burton Coliseum
8on March 9, 2019; and
9 WHEREAS, the state championship quarterfinal, semifinal, and final victories
10capped a run of eleven straight wins to end the 2019 season for the North Central
11Hurricanes, a sensational finish for Coach Apphia Jordan's boys' basketball team, which had
12only gone as far as the semifinals in 2018; and
13 WHEREAS, Coach Jordan is the second woman to lead a boys' team to a state title
14in Louisiana and was named Class 1A Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers
15Association; she also received St. Landry Parish Coach of the Year, District Co-Coach of
16the Year, and Class A Coach of the Year honors; and
17 WHEREAS, four players earned special merit for exemplary play in the 2018-2019
18season: Derrick Tezeno was named to the St. Landry Parish, District 1A, and Class A First
19Teams and earned Most Valuable Player honors in St. Landry Parish and for District 1A;
20Nikembe Johnson was named to the St. Landry Parish and District 1A First Teams and to

1the Class A Second Team; Reginald Stoner was named to the St. Landry Parish and District
21A First Teams, the District 1A All-Defensive Team, and Class A Honorable Mention; and
3Jalen Smith was named to the St. Landry Parish and District 1A Second Teams; and
4 WHEREAS, each student athlete on the team performed at the highest levels of
5excellence on the court and deserves recognition for his vital contributions to the winning
6effort: senior Jalen Smith; juniors Lionel Harrison, Nikembe Johnson, Kaleb Smith, and
7Jalen Wilson; sophomores Kylyn Joseph and Derrick Tezeno; and freshmen Jamarey Cane,
8Aaron Johnson, and Reginald Stoner, all of whom displayed amazing feats of athleticism and
9endurance throughout the season; and
10 WHEREAS, Coach Jordan and her assistant coaches, Kerrick Alexander, Arnold
11Gore, Rayvon Gray, and Crystal Trahan; team managers O'Trention Morrison and Tyler
12Randall; and administrators Principal Reginald Bush, Assistant Principal Brandi Reed, and
13Athletic Director Jacobi Thierry capably and admirably contributed to the successes of the
14North Central High School 2018-2019 boys' basketball program and were invaluable to the
15team's quest to capture its first-ever state championship; Coach Jordan has instilled an
16attitude of winning in these student athletes and has demonstrated leadership and
17motivational skills that will keep the members of the team on a path of excellence for the rest
18of their lives; and
19 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the well-deserved title the Hurricanes have
20earned; to commend the team for the ability it has displayed, particularly at the most difficult
21level of competition; and to express sincere and heartfelt congratulations to the team
22members and coaching staff for the merits earned and the sportsmanship shown while
23achieving the highest state boys' basketball honor possible for North Central High School.
24 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
25Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the athletes, coaches,
26support, and administrative staff of the North Central High School boys' basketball team for
27winning the 2019 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 1A state championship,
28capping off a truly spectacular season, and does hereby recognize the team's outstanding
29performance and the pride and honor it has brought to its school and community.

1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
2Coach Apphia Jordan.
