HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 120

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the Thibodaux High School boys' basketball team on
winning the 2019 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A state
championship
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend the Thibodaux High School boys' basketball team upon winning the 2019
3 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A state championship.
4 WHEREAS, on March 9, 2019, in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association
5(LHSAA) Allstate Sugar Bowl Marsh Madness Tournament in Burton Coliseum in Lake
6Charles, the top-seeded Thibodaux Tigers battled No. 3 seed Walker High School and
7ultimately denied their opponent a second state title while earning a first-ever state
8championship for Thibodaux High School; scoring a scorching thirty points in the fourth
9quarter, Thibodaux rallied to achieve the 70-60 victory; and
10 WHEREAS, senior Kobi Johnson, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player,
11poured in a team-high 18 points, had nine rebounds, and handed out three assists; he was a
12defensive juggernaut against Walker's best guard, Jalen Cook, holding him to nine points
13below his season average; and
14 WHEREAS, the Thibodaux Tigers finished the regular season with an overall wins-
15losses record of 33-2 and a perfect 12-0 record in district play; they concluded their regular
16season with a prolific run of 17 consecutive wins that reached 19 straight with the inclusion
17of two tournament wins, and for the first time in school history, the Tigers returned home
18victorious from the LHSAA basketball playoffs with the championship trophy in tow; and
19 WHEREAS, under the leadership of Head Coach Tony Clark and his assistant
20coaches, Robert Brisco and Michael Young, and with the help of team managers Julaya

1Blackmon, Kaylee Hebert, and Montayhza Williams, athletic trainer Jerry Blackwell, team
2statistician Shyheem Thompson, and administrative support from Thibodaux High School
3Principal Glenn Haydel, each member of the Thibodaux boys' basketball team exerted the
4energy and discipline necessary to become champions and deserves mention: seniors
5Davonte Davis, Kobi Johnson, Marvin Robertson, Jr., and Rashod Robison; juniors
6Sha'Khiry Brown, J'Mari Carter, Darwin Davis, Kelly Raymond, Tyren Young; sophomores
7Kevonte Davis, Khiry Miller, Rolaun Richard, and Rashad Winslow; and freshman Jai Boyd;
8and
9 WHEREAS, Coach Clark has instilled an ethic of winning in these fine young men
10and has demonstrated leadership and motivational skills that have led to success both on and
11off the court for the Thibodaux Tigers; and
12 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the well-deserved title the Thibodaux High
13School Tigers have earned; to commend the team for the ability they have displayed,
14particularly at the most difficult level of competition; and to express sincere and heartfelt
15congratulations to team members and the coaching staff for the merits earned and the
16sportsmanship shown while achieving the highest state boys' basketball honor possible for
17Thibodaux High School.
18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
19Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the student athletes,
20coaches, and management staff of the Thibodaux High School boys' basketball team for
21winning the 2019 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A state championship
22and completing a truly spectacular season; and does hereby recognize the team's outstanding
23performance and the pride and honor they have brought to their school and community.
24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Head
25Coach Tony Clark.
