COMMENDATIONS: Commends Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of
Opelousas on its eighty-sixth anniversary
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend Pastor Johnnie R. Offord and the congregation of Greater New Hope
3 Missionary Baptist Church of Opelousas upon the occasion of the eighty-sixth
4 anniversary of the church.
5 WHEREAS, the history of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of
6Opelousas is one hundred eighty-five years long; in 1834, New Hope Baptist Church was
7established in Leonville, Louisiana, where the congregation worshiped for ninety-nine years;
8in 1933, the church body moved to 509 Garland Avenue in Opelousas and expanded the
9name to Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Opelousas; and
10 WHEREAS, for more than eight decades, Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist
11Church has served the community of Opelousas and led the lost to a saving knowledge of
12Christ; and
13 WHEREAS, Pastor Johnnie R. Offord was called as the spiritual shepherd of Greater
14New Hope Missionary Baptist Church on March 7, 2010, and he has faithfully fed the flock
15with the Word of God; and
16 WHEREAS, under the direction of Pastor Offord, and with the assistance of the
17church secretary, Linde E. Hills, and the willing hands of the members, the church received
18an updated look when it was bricked in 2018; and
19 WHEREAS, upon the eighty-sixth anniversary celebration of Greater New Hope
20Missionary Baptist Church of Opelousas, it is fitting to recognize the positive impact the

1church has had on its membership and community, its outreach to the unsaved, and the
2expansion of God's Kingdom through nearly two centuries of service in two locations.
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby congratulate and commend the membership of Greater
5New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Opelousas upon the celebration of its eighty-sixth
6anniversary in the city of Opelousas and does hereby express best thoughts and prayers for
7the fellowship to remain faithful in the work of the Lord.
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
9Pastor Johnnie R. Offord.
