HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 19

SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes April 2019 as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month
in Louisiana
1 A RESOLUTION
2To recognize April 2019 as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month in Louisiana.
3 WHEREAS, sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect almost any organ
4in the body and causes heightened immunity, which means that a person's immune system,
5which normally protects the body from infection and disease, overreacts, resulting in damage
6to the body's own tissues; and
7 WHEREAS, the classic feature of sarcoidosis is the formation of granulomas,
8microscopic clumps of inflammatory cells; and
9 WHEREAS, sarcoidosis can affect people of any age, race, or gender, but it is most
10prevalent among adults between the ages of twenty and forty and in African Americans and
11people of European, particularly Scandinavian, descent; and
12 WHEREAS, the mission of The Sarcoidosis Awareness Foundation of Louisiana is
13to educate and raise awareness about the disease, to raise funds for research to find the cause
14and a cure for the disease, and to develop new medications to aid those suffering from
15sarcoidosis; and
16 WHEREAS, the foundation provides support to families, friends, and caregivers
17through awareness, education, emotional support, and understanding; and
18 WHEREAS, the foundation also provides mutual sharing of experiences, discussion
19of feelings, and sharing of coping strategies and encouragement that will improve the quality
20of life for those affected by sarcoidosis; and

1 WHEREAS, during the month of April, the citizens of Louisiana are encouraged to
2learn about the causes and effects of sarcoidosis.
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize April 2019 as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month
5in Louisiana.
6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
7to Rodney K. Reese, founder and chief executive officer of The Sarcoidosis Awareness
8Foundation of Louisiana.
