COMMENDATIONS: Commends Vice President Mike Pence for his visit to African
American churches in St. Landry Parish destroyed by arson
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend Vice President Mike Pence upon the occasion of his visit to Louisiana after the
3 devastating destruction of three African American churches in St. Landry Parish by
4 arson.
5 WHEREAS, three historically black Baptist churches in St. Landry Parish were
6burned down within ten days, March 26 through April 4; the fires occurred at Mount
7Pleasant Baptist Church, St. Mary's Baptist Church, and Greater Union Baptist Church and
8were all acts of arson; all three churches were well over a hundred years old; and
9 WHEREAS, Mike Pence's political views are strongly shaped by his Christian faith
10and he condemned such attacks and said, "No one should ever fear for their safety in a house
11of worship in America or anywhere in the world"; and
12 WHEREAS, the vice president praised the charity, steadfastness, and positive
13example the parishioners and community members showed in the face of evil; and
14 WHEREAS, since the arson and hate crimes occurred, more than two million dollars
15has been raised to help repair the sites; although the buildings are temporarily gone, the
16church communities are still very much alive; and
17 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to extend a sincere measure of gratitude to Vice
18President Mike Pence for taking the time to meet with the three pastors of the affected
19churches and pray with the parishioners.
20 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
21Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Vice President Mike Pence upon the

1occasion of his visit to Louisiana after the devastating destruction of three African American
2churches in St. Landry Parish by arson; does hereby record for posterity the positive impact
3his presence made on the lives of the parishioners in the wake of tragedy; and does hereby
4offer welcome to Vice President Mike Pence for any future occasion he may have to visit
5Louisiana.
6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Vice
7President Mike Pence.
