ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 225 BY REPRESENTATIVE AMEDEE A RESOLUTION To commend Vice President Mike Pence upon the occasion of his visit to Louisiana after the devastating destruction of three African American churches in St. Landry Parish by arson. WHEREAS, three historically black Baptist churches in St. Landry Parish were burned down within ten days, March 26 through April 4; the fires occurred at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, St. Mary's Baptist Church, and Greater Union Baptist Church and were all acts of arson; all three churches were well over a hundred years old; and WHEREAS, Mike Pence's political views are strongly shaped by his Christian faith and he condemned such attacks and said, "No one should ever fear for their safety in a house of worship in America or anywhere in the world"; and WHEREAS, the vice president praised the charity, steadfastness, and positive example the parishioners and community members showed in the face of evil; and WHEREAS, since the arson and hate crimes occurred, more than two million dollars has been raised to help repair the sites; although the buildings are temporarily gone, the church communities are still very much alive; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate to extend a sincere measure of gratitude to Vice President Mike Pence for taking the time to meet with the three pastors of the affected churches and pray with the parishioners. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Vice President Mike Pence upon the occasion of his visit to Louisiana after the devastating destruction of three African American churches in St. Landry Parish by arson; does hereby record for posterity the positive impact his presence made on the lives of the parishioners in the wake of tragedy; and does hereby Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 225 ENROLLED offer welcome to Vice President Mike Pence for any future occasion he may have to visit Louisiana.
