HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 235

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the organizers and volunteers of the 2019 Washington
Parish Juneteenth Celebration
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend the organizers and volunteers of the 2019 Washington Parish Juneteenth
3 Celebration.
4 WHEREAS, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People of
5Washington Parish is organizing an event in celebration of Juneteenth, to be held on
6Saturday, June 15, 2019, in Cassidy Park in Bogalusa; and
7 WHEREAS, Juneteenth is an annual observance and celebration of the end of slavery
8in the United States; and
9 WHEREAS, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon
10Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the war had ended and the enslaved
11were now free; and 
12 WHEREAS, the day has been celebrated as the day African Americans received the
13news of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation; and
14 WHEREAS, the slogan of this year's ceremony in Bogalusa is "Strength in our past,
15faith in our future"; and
16 WHEREAS, the festival will include a car show, a parade, live entertainment, and
17vendors; and
18 WHEREAS, special guests will be Tea J. Moore honoring Kelvin Carter and Oneal
19Moore; the commemoration will be in memory of Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D.
20 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
21Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize the Juneteenth celebration in Bogalusa

1sponsored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People of
2Washington Parish and does hereby commend all volunteers and organizers involved in
3bringing this stellar celebration to fruition.
4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
5organizers of the Washington Parish Juneteenth celebration.
