HLS 19RS-264 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 27 BY REPRESENTATIVE PUGH SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates May 14, 2019, as Elmer's Candy Day in Louisiana 1 A RESOLUTION 2To designate Tuesday, May 14, 2019, as Elmer's Candy Day in the state of Louisiana. 3 WHEREAS, Elmer Chocolate, located in Ponchatoula, is currently the second largest 4heart box manufacturer in the country; and 5 WHEREAS, the forerunner of Elmer Chocolate was Miller Candy Corporation, 6which was founded in New Orleans in 1855 by former pastry chef Christopher Henry Miller; 7and 8 WHEREAS, Miller Candy Corporation became Elmer Candy Corporation when 9Miller's son-in-law and business partner Augustus Elmer brought his sons into the fold; and 10 WHEREAS, Elmer Candy Corporation, also known as Elmer Chocolate, increased 11its national presence by adding several new factories and introducing a wide variety of 12confections and snacks; and 13 WHEREAS, the origin of Heavenly Hash Eggs can be traced to 1923, and Gold Brick 14Eggs were first made in 1936; along with Pecan Eggs, these three Easter season favorites 15outsell national leaders five to one along the Gulf Coast; and 16 WHEREAS, in the early 1960s, Roy Nelson became a partner in the enterprise, and 17he purchased the entire company from the Elmer family and encouraged his son Allan to join 18the endeavor; and 19 WHEREAS, the two men centralized operations by opening a manufacturer facility 20in Ponchatoula and refocused the company's offerings by concentrating on seasonal 21chocolates, rather than everyday candy and snacks; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 19RS-264 ORIGINAL HR NO. 27 1 WHEREAS, the third generation of the Nelson family operates Elmer Chocolate, and 2the company continues to create sweet memories for new generations of candy lovers. 3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Tuesday, May 14, 2019, as Elmer's Candy 5Day in the state of Louisiana in celebration of the sweet contributions of Elmer Chocolate 6to the state. 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 8to the Nelson family of Elmer Candy Company.
