SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates June 24, 2019, as James "Jay" Dixon Day
and commends his service to the state
1 A RESOLUTION
2To designate Monday, June 24, 2019, as James "Jay" Dixon Day in Louisiana and to
3 commend him for his services to the state.
4 WHEREAS, James "Jay" Dixon has been the state public defender of Louisiana for
5nearly six years; and
6 WHEREAS, prior to his current appointment, Mr. Dixon was the district defender
7of Calcasieu and Cameron Parishes for more than two years; and
8 WHEREAS, as the district defender, Mr. Dixon occupied the office during a difficult
9time characterized by lack of funding; due to budgetary shortfalls, the office of public
10defender was compelled to refuse cases, and private members of the bar were appointed on
11a pro bono basis to handle cases; and
12 WHEREAS, even under these difficult circumstances, because of Mr. Dixon's skilled
13leadership, the public defender's office in Calcasieu and Cameron Parishes emerged as one
14of the strongest public defender's offices in the state of Louisiana; and
15 WHEREAS, because of his success as a district defender, Mr. Dixon was the first
16recipient of the Louisiana State Bar Association's Catherine D. Kimball Award for the
17Advancement of the Administration of Justice; and
18 WHEREAS, Mr. Dixon received the Gideon Award from the Louisiana Association
19of Criminal Defense Lawyers and an award from the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury; and
20 WHEREAS, Mr. Dixon has accepted a job offer from the state of Massachusetts, and
21he will leave his current position at the end of June; and

1 WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the House of Representatives to honor
2Mr. Dixon for his many services to the state of Louisiana.
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Monday, June 24, 2019, as James "Jay"
5Dixon Day in the state; does hereby commend Mr. Dixon for his manifold contributions to
6the juvenile justice system in Louisiana; and does sincerely wish him all the best in his
7future endeavors.
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
9James Dixon.
