HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 288

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends James D. Madden for his community service
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend James D. Madden for his community service.
3 WHEREAS, James D. Madden was born in the Heflin community in Webster Parish
4on January 13, 1938; after his early years there, his family moved to Minden, and he
5attended Minden Grammar School and graduated from Minden High School; and
6 WHEREAS, in 1957, Mr. Madden enrolled in the civil engineering program at
7Louisiana Tech University, but this path was cut short by family responsibilities; his family
8business was one of the early pioneers to venture into asphalt paving in North Louisiana; and
9 WHEREAS, Mr. Madden married Lyda Roberts Madden, and sixty years later, the
10Maddens take great pride and joy in the family they have raised together; their sons,
11S. Douglas Madden, David Scott Madden, and John A. Madden run the family's flagship
12company, Madden Contracting Company, as well as satellite entities under the company
13umbrella; their daughter, Sarah Margaret Madden, lost her life in 2004, leaving James and
14Lyda two wonderful granddaughters, Savannah and Catherine Willis; they have eight other
15beloved grandchildren and eleven precious great-grandchildren; and
16 WHEREAS, in addition to Madden Contracting Company, Mr. Madden's
17professional career spans his involvement with Webster Bank and Trust, Minden Bank and
18Trust, and Minden Medical Center; and
19 WHEREAS, a true advocate for education, Mr. Madden shares his talents and
20expertise on the board of Glenbrook School and has been instrumental in helping to make
21many physical improvements to the campus; and

1 WHEREAS, Mr. Madden, having spent more than half a century in the construction
2business, knows well the need for a trained, educated, and experienced work force, and his
3knowledge and insights in this area led him to develop a keen interest in technical education;
4and
5 WHEREAS, several years ago, Mr. Madden and former state senator Robert Adley
6began the push to upgrade the trade school in Minden, and the result of their collaboration
7was Northwest Louisiana Technical College, renamed by House Bill No. 89 of this Regular
8Session of the Legislature as the Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College;
9Mr. Madden played a significant role in efforts to rename and broaden the programmatic
10scope of this institution; and
11 WHEREAS, Mr. Madden merits a special measure of commendation for his
12outstanding accomplishments and for the pride he brings to his community and state.
13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
14Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend James D. Madden for his community
15service; does hereby express enduring appreciation for his singular contributions to the
16citizens of Webster Parish and the state of Louisiana; and does hereby extend to him best
17wishes for continued success in his future endeavors.
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
19James D. Madden.
