HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 288

A RESOLUTION
To commend James D. Madden for his community service.
WHEREAS, James D. Madden was born in the Heflin community in Webster Parish
on January 13, 1938; after his early years there, his family moved to Minden, and he
attended Minden Grammar School and graduated from Minden High School; and
WHEREAS, in 1957, Mr. Madden enrolled in the civil engineering program at
Louisiana Tech University, but this path was cut short by family responsibilities; his family
business was one of the early pioneers to venture into asphalt paving in North Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Madden married Lyda Roberts Madden, and sixty years later, the
Maddens take great pride and joy in the family they have raised together; their sons,
S. Douglas Madden, David Scott Madden, and John A. Madden run the family's flagship
company, Madden Contracting Company, as well as satellite entities under the company
umbrella; their daughter, Sarah Margaret Madden, lost her life in 2004, leaving James and
Lyda two wonderful granddaughters, Savannah and Catherine Willis; they have eight other
beloved grandchildren and eleven precious great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, in addition to Madden Contracting Company, Mr. Madden's
professional career spans his involvement with Webster Bank and Trust, Minden Bank and
Trust, and Minden Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, a true advocate for education, Mr. Madden shares his talents and
expertise on the board of Glenbrook School and has been instrumental in helping to make
many physical improvements to the campus; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Madden, having spent more than half a century in the construction
business, knows well the need for a trained, educated, and experienced work force, and his
knowledge and insights in this area led him to develop a keen interest in technical education;
and

WHEREAS, several years ago, Mr. Madden and former state Senator Robert Adley
began the push to upgrade the trade school in Minden, and the result of their collaboration
was Northwest Louisiana Technical College, renamed by House Bill No. 89 of this Regular
Session of the Legislature as the Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College;
Mr. Madden played a significant role in efforts to rename and broaden the programmatic
scope of this institution; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Madden merits a special measure of commendation for his
outstanding accomplishments and for the pride he brings to his community and state.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend James D. Madden for his community
service; does hereby express enduring appreciation for his singular contributions to the
citizens of Webster Parish and the state of Louisiana; and does hereby extend to him best
wishes for continued success in his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
James D. Madden.
