CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences on the death of Napoleon "Fat Sam" Meadors,
Jr.
1 A RESOLUTION
2To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Napoleon
3 "Fat Sam" Meadors, Jr.
4 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
5Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Napoleon "Fat Sam"
6Meadors, Jr., on Sunday, March 31, 2019, at the age of eighty-seven; and
7 WHEREAS, Napoleon Meadors, Jr., was born on February 13, 1932, in Haynesville,
8Louisiana, to Napoleon Meadors, Sr., and Maggie Washington and graduated from
9Haynesville Colored High School (now known as the Carter G. Woodson High School),
10where he was a star on the football field, leading his team to two state championships; he
11went on to study and continue playing football at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas; and
12 WHEREAS, he was married to Mary Lee Glover, his No. 1 cheerleader and the love
13of his life, for sixty-seven years; to this union, nine children were born; and
14 WHEREAS, he taught his children countless life lessons, instilling in them the
15importance of hard work, responsibility, and honesty; he and Mary ensured they had a solid
16Christian foundation based on involvement in the church; "Fat Sam" was a long-time
17member and deacon of Friendship Baptist Church; he also stressed the importance of
18education to his children and supported their pursuit of extracurricular activities, attending
19as many of their band and choir concerts and basketball and football games as possible; and
20 WHEREAS, exploring different career paths, he worked at the Martin and Holt
21grocery stores, operated a landscaping and cleaning service, where he employed his sons,

1served as one of the two original African American police officers for the city of
2Haynesville, and retired as a field technician from Citi-Service Corp in 1998; and
3 WHEREAS, upon retiring, "Fat Sam" enjoyed spending time with his family,
4running his bush hog, and breeding and raising hogs; and
5 WHEREAS, "Fat Sam" was a member of the Haynesville Masonic Lodge #108 and
6was involved with the Golden Tornado Quarterback Club of Haynesville High School; his
7consistent mentoring and leadership of young football players led to the naming of the club
8building in his honor; and
9 WHEREAS, Mr. Meadors is survived by his wife, Mary L. Glover Meadors; sons,
10Napoleon Meadors, III, and his wife Alyce, Johnnie Meadors, Sr., James E. Meadors, Sr.,
11and his wife Constance, Nathaniel Meadors, Sr., and his wife Kathy, Norman Meadors, Sr.,
12and his wife Vera, and Roderick Meadors, and his wife Cindy; daughters, Mae Katherine
13Williams, and her husband Franklin, Sr., and Marcia Denise Grider, and her husband
14Fernando, Sr.; brothers, Albert L. Kirk, and his wife Gloria, and Charles Henderson; thirty
15grandchildren; thirty-eight great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; and a host of
16nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and
17 WHEREAS, Napoleon "Fat Sam" Meadors, Jr., was a devoted husband, father,
18grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, and public servant; his passing leaves
19a void in the lives of family, friends, and community.
20 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
21Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express condolences upon the death of Napoleon "Fat
22Sam" Meadors, Jr.; does hereby express heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends; and
23does hereby extend thoughts and wishes for peace in this time of sorrow and hopes for fond
24and lasting memories.
25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
26to the family of Napoleon "Fat Sam" Meadors, Jr.
