HLS 19RS-3776 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 318 BY REPRESENTATIVE PIERRE COMMENDATIONS: Commends Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church on its fiftieth anniversary 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lafayette upon the celebration 3 of its fiftieth anniversary. 4 WHEREAS, on June 9, 1969, Bishop Maurice Schexnayder formally established the 5parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace, and land was purchased two years later on Lillian Road 6in Lafayette, now known as Martin Luther King Jr. Drive; the congregation worshiped at 7Lafayette Catholic Center until construction of the church was completed and the facility 8was dedicated by Most Rev. Gerard L. Frey, Bishop, on November 2, 1975; and 9 WHEREAS, God has blessed Our Lady Queen of Peace with spiritual shepherds 10throughout its fifty years of worship, from its first pastor, Rev. Jude Speyrer, through 11Rev. Hampton Davis, who has pastored the flock since 2007; the church's ministries are 12many and include youth, adult, and Gospel choirs; altar servers; religious education 13coordinators and catechists; vacation bible school; performing arts; ushers; Ladies Altar 14Society; St. Vincent de Paul Society; Parish Pastoral Council; lay ministers of Eucharist; 15Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court 206; Knights of Peter Claver Council 206 16and junior and junior daughter branches of Peter Claver; and Legion of Mary; and 17 WHEREAS, the faith of the parishioners of Our Lady Queen of Peace was tested in 18April 2010 when the church was destroyed by fire; Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Anthony, 19St. Paul, and the Lafayette Parish school board's Truman Montessori gym served as 20temporary worship centers and places where marriages and funerals were conducted for the Page 1 of 2 HLS 19RS-3776 ORIGINAL HR NO. 318 1membership while the church was rebuilt; a steeple was added to the building, and the first 2worship in the new sanctuary was held on Sunday, December 16, 2012; and 3 WHEREAS, after half a century, Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church remains 4a body of believers who are not limited by racial or geographical division; its members have 5been united into the family of God, and it is appropriate to commemorate the celebration of 6the fiftieth anniversary of the parish. 7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 8Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Rev. Hampton Davis and 9the parishioners of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church on the joyous celebration of 10its fiftieth anniversary; does hereby recognize and applaud the ministries that have 11strengthened the lives of those who live in the community the church serves; and does 12hereby offer best hopes and prayers that the light of God will continue to shine through Our 13Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. 14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Rev. 15Hampton Davis.
