ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 318 BY REPRESENTATIVE PIERRE A RESOLUTION To commend Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lafayette upon the celebration of its fiftieth anniversary. WHEREAS, on June 9, 1969, Bishop Maurice Schexnayder formally established the parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace, and land was purchased two years later on Lillian Road in Lafayette, now known as Martin Luther King Jr. Drive; the congregation worshiped at Lafayette Catholic Center until construction of the church was completed and the facility was dedicated by Most Rev. Gerard L. Frey, Bishop, on November 2, 1975; and WHEREAS, God has blessed Our Lady Queen of Peace with spiritual shepherds throughout its fifty years of worship, from its first pastor, Rev. Jude Speyrer, through Rev. Hampton Davis, who has pastored the flock since 2007; the church's ministries are many and include youth, adult, and Gospel choirs; altar servers; religious education coordinators and catechists; vacation bible school; performing arts; ushers; Ladies Altar Society; St. Vincent de Paul Society; Parish Pastoral Council; lay ministers of Eucharist; Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court 206; Knights of Peter Claver Council 206 and junior and junior daughter branches of Peter Claver; and Legion of Mary; and WHEREAS, the faith of the parishioners of Our Lady Queen of Peace was tested in April 2010 when the church was destroyed by fire; Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Anthony, St. Paul, and the Lafayette Parish school board's Truman Montessori gym served as temporary worship centers and places where marriages and funerals were conducted for the membership while the church was rebuilt; a steeple was added to the building, and the first worship in the new sanctuary was held on Sunday, December 16, 2012; and WHEREAS, after half a century, Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church remains a body of believers who are not limited by racial or geographical division; its members have Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 318 ENROLLED been united into the family of God, and it is appropriate to commemorate the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the parish. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Rev. Hampton Davis and the parishioners of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church on the joyous celebration of its fiftieth anniversary; does hereby recognize and applaud the ministries that have strengthened the lives of those who live in the community the church serves; and does hereby offer best hopes and prayers that the light of God will continue to shine through Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
