HLS 19RS-946 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 4 BY REPRESENTATIVES JAY MORRIS AND CREWS COMMENDATIONS: Commends Mason Andrews on setting the record for the youngest pilot to solo circumnavigate the globe 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend Mason Andrews on setting a new Guinness World Record for the youngest 3 pilot ever to fly solo around the world. 4 WHEREAS, on the salutary and memorable occasion of the world-record breaking 5solo flight around the world, it is appropriate that Mason Andrews be commended and 6celebrated, not only for his extraordinary trip, but for using it as an opportunity to raise funds 7and awareness for MedCamps of Louisiana, where he serves as a counselor; and 8 WHEREAS, with the support of his loving parents, Jeb and Nancy, Mason planned 9the worldwide trip, set up an online fundraising page for trip expenses, and pledged anything 10raised beyond his expenses to MedCamps of Louisiana; Mason raised an impressive $30,000 11for the organization that offers summer camps, in the town of Choudrant, for children with 12developmental and physical disabilities completely free of charge; its mission is to "improve 13the health and wellness of people living with chronic illnesses and disabilities through 14unique recreational and educational camping experiences"; and 15 WHEREAS, the first time Mason ever flew an aircraft was on a trip to Europe in 162013; the following summer, Mason obtained his paraglider's license; soon thereafter, he 17took flying lessons and entered the professional aviation program at Louisiana Tech 18University in Ruston; and 19 WHEREAS, at the age of eighteen, Mason departed in his Piper PA-32 Lance, named 20"The Spirit of Louisiane", a nod to Charles Lindbergh's "The Spirit of St. Louis"; Mason left 21from the Monroe Regional Airport on July 22, 2018, and his trip took seventy-six days; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 19RS-946 ORIGINAL HR NO. 4 1 WHEREAS, circumnavigating the entire planet, he stopped in several countries, 2including Canada, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Pakistan, India, Thailand, the 3Phillippines, Japan, and Russia; and 4 WHEREAS, upon his return, the Louisiana Tech Foundation awarded him a 5scholarship; Mason is currently writing a book about his travels and plans to pursue a career 6in flying; and 7 WHEREAS, Mason's accomplishments have brought great pride and joy to his 8family and friends, the Louisiana Tech community, and the state of Louisiana. 9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 10Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Mason Andrews on setting a new Guinness 11World Record for the youngest pilot ever to fly around the world solo; does hereby express 12sincere gratitude to Mason for his kindness and integrity which are so evident in his heartfelt 13efforts on behalf of his fellow citizens; and does hereby wish him full measures of happiness 14and success in all of his future flying endeavors. 15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 16to Mason Andrews.
