HLS 19RS-1091 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 55 BY REPRESENTATIVE LEOPOLD SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates April 23, 2019, as Plaquemines Parish Day at the state capitol 1 A RESOLUTION 2To designate Tuesday, April 23, 2019, as Plaquemines Parish Day at the state capitol. 3 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is home to more than twenty-three thousand 4residents, and is the site of many historic events; and 5 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish serves an important role in the oil and trade 6industries; and 7 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is the parish with the most combined land and water 8area in Louisiana, and is located along the last seventy miles of the Mississippi River; and 9 WHEREAS, the parish became known as Plaquemines after the French name for 10their military post, "piakimin", which means persimmon, a name given because of the 11numerous persimmon trees near the post; and 12 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish was the first place in the United States where 13shippers used a container for cargo in foreign trade; and 14 WHEREAS, Fort Jackson is a major historical site in the parish, dating back to 1822, 15and was built pursuant to a recommendation from General Andrew Jackson; the fort was 16later used during the Civil War and as a training base for troops during World War I; and 17 WHEREAS, Woodland Plantation, an antebellum mansion in Plaquemines Parish, 18serves as a bed and breakfast and is depicted on the label for Southern Comfort whiskey; and 19 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish has significant seafood and citrus industries and is 20the largest crude oil producing parish in Louisiana; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 19RS-1091 ORIGINAL HR NO. 55 1 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is also home to Plaquemines Port, one of the largest 2ports in the United States; and 3 WHEREAS, though the parish may be prone to flooding because of its location along 4the Mississippi River, its people remain resilient and loyal. 5 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 6Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Tuesday, April 23, 2019, as Plaquemines 7Parish Day at the state capitol. 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 9to Kirk Lepine, president of Plaquemines Parish.
