HLS 19RS-958 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 6 BY REPRESENTATIVE COX COMMENDATIONS: Commends Vanessa "Gal Holiday" Niemann on her 2019 induction into the Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend Vanessa "Gal Holiday" Niemann upon her 2019 induction into the Louisiana 3 Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists. 4 WHEREAS, established in 1976, the Louisiana Folklife Center is a research facility 5that serves as an archival repository of eight hundred artist and subject files, one thousand 6five hundred audio recordings, one hundred videotapes, a growing print library of books and 7periodicals, and five thousand photographs; these resources have been used by CBS Evening 8News, Turner Broadcasting Company, and Louisiana Public Broadcasting and other 9individuals, groups, and agencies; its faculty also coordinates the Natchitoches-Northwestern 10State University Folklife Festival; and 11 WHEREAS, an agency of Northwestern State University, the Center's mission is to 12identify, document, and present Louisiana's rich history of folklore and folklife; and 13 WHEREAS, Appalachian-born songstress Vanessa Niemann, better known as "Gal 14Holiday", is sometimes called "the punk rock Patsy Cline", and she has embraced the sounds 15of Louisiana's folklife; and 16 WHEREAS, Vanessa has lent her powerful voice and magnetic stage presence to 17musical projects in New Orleans, across the United States, and around the world, having 18shared the stage with musical giants like Willie Nelson, Marcia Ball, and the Blind Boys of 19Alabama; and 20 WHEREAS, Vanessa and the Honky Tonk Revue have played at the New Orleans 21Jazz and Heritage Festival for years and have received Big Easy and Best of the Beat Page 1 of 2 HLS 19RS-958 ORIGINAL HR NO. 6 1awards; in 2017, she was nominated for an Ameripolitan Award in the category of Honky 2Tonk Female, and in 2018, Gal Holiday (Vanessa's stage name) won Best of the Beat for 3Best Country/Folk/Singer-Songwriter Artist; her album "Lost and Found" also won Best 4Country/Folk/Singer-Songwriter from Offbeat Magazine; and 5 WHEREAS, Vanessa "Gal Holiday" Niemann has made the music of her adopted 6state of Louisiana her own and she merits a special measure of commendation upon her 2019 7induction into the Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists. 8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 9Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Vanessa "Gal Holiday" Niemann upon her 102019 induction into the Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists; does hereby 11congratulate her on the numerous awards and accolades she has received for her musical 12achievements; and does hereby extend to her every good wish for continued success, 13prosperity, and happiness in the future. 14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 15to Vanessa Niemann.
