HLS 19RS-1191 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 63 BY REPRESENTATIVE MIKE JOHNSON COMMENDATIONS: Commends Mallory Byrd on being named the 2019 Louisiana Elementary School Student of the Year 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend Mallory Byrd upon being named the 2019 Elementary School Student of the 3 Year by the Louisiana Department of Education and to recognize her extraordinary 4 accomplishments. 5 WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the House of Representatives recognizes the 6exceptional intelligence and boundless energies of Mallory Byrd, an outstanding fifth grade 7student at Hayden R. Lawrence Upper Elementary School in Deville, Louisiana, who has 8demonstrated excellence in academic achievement, artistic talent, community service, good 9character, and civic duty; and 10 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Department of Education annually selects one student 11from the elementary, middle, and high school grades of public and non-public schools from 12a list of twenty-one regional finalists based on criteria that measure academic achievement, 13leadership skills, character, and service to the student's school and community; each regional 14finalist must submit a portfolio and complete a written composition on the day of the award 15ceremony, and an independent selection committee interviews the finalists and evaluates 16their communication and critical thinking skills; from the elementary school grade level, 17Mallory Byrd was chosen and received the honor of being named 2019 Elementary School 18Student of the Year at the Louisiana State Museum on April 11, 2019; and 19 WHEREAS, Mallory is the oldest of the seven children of Warren and Jennifer Byrd 20of Pineville, and she attends the same school both her parents attended; Mallory has made 21indelible marks both in and outside of the classroom; and Page 1 of 3 HLS 19RS-1191 ORIGINAL HR NO. 63 1 WHEREAS, Mallory participates in the gifted and talented academic and visual arts 2programs and maintains a 4.0 GPA; her artwork has won awards and been featured in area 3museums; and 4 WHEREAS, Mallory is president of the 4-H Club at her school; she is in her sixth 5year as a piano student and assists the preschool music class at Hayden R. Lawrence Upper 6Elementary School; Mallory also sings in the children's choir at her church, performs solos 7for musicals, and carols at nursing homes; and 8 WHEREAS, other extracurricular activities Mallory enjoys include gymnastics and 9soccer; she serves her community through Operation Christmas Child, which provides boxes 10of toys to children in need; she volunteers at the foster care closet; and 11 WHEREAS, reading is one of Mallory's favorite hobbies, and she visits her local 12library to peruse books and participate in the many programs the library offers to the 13community; and 14 WHEREAS, Mallory helps her neighbors in the care of their horses and spends time 15exploring her ancestry; her appreciation of experiments and the hands-on learning 16opportunities offered by teachers at Hayden R. Lawrence Upper Elementary School have 17inspired her to consider her future career path as a science teacher; and 18 WHEREAS, Mallory Byrd is a talented scholar, a gifted artist, and a civic-minded 19citizen who demonstrates a commitment to excellence that is commendable in a person of 20her youth, and she is most deserving of the title she has earned as 2019 Elementary School 21Student of the Year. 22 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 23Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Mallory Byrd upon being 24named 2019 Louisiana Elementary School Student of the Year; does hereby recognize her 25contributions to the betterment of her school and community; does hereby extend to her 26enduring appreciation for the tremendous pride and honor she brings to her family, friends, 27school, city, parish, and state; and does hereby express best wishes for continued success in 28her future endeavors. 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 30to Mallory Byrd.
