ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 68 BY REPRESENTATIVE DUPLESSIS A RESOLUTION To recognize Thursday, April 25, 2019, as Jack and Jill Day at the state capitol. WHEREAS, Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, is a membership organization that is dedicated to nurturing future African American leaders through an emphasis on leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving, and civic duty; and WHEREAS, the organization was founded on January 24, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when twenty mothers came together to discuss the creation of an organization to provide social, cultural, and educational opportunities for youth between the ages of two and nineteen; and WHEREAS, Jack and Jill had ten chapters in 1946; today the organization boasts more than two hundred thirty chapters nationwide, representing more than forty thousand members; and WHEREAS, each chapter of Jack and Jill plans annual activities to promote a national theme; and WHEREAS, through service projects, Jack and Jill enables children to grow and develop, and through lobbying, educational programming, dissemination of education materials, and the organization of community events, Jack and Jill promotes public awareness and enhances the interests of children; and WHEREAS, within Jack and Jill, implementation of the 5A Action Plan attempts to increase the organization's legislative sphere of influence by encouraging members to align, activate, advocate, act, and acknowledge in order to cultivate educated and engaged citizens who can carry on its legacy of advocacy and civic duty; and WHEREAS, each year, Jack and Jill attempts to help children understand the political process by sponsoring a visit to the capitol to give them an opportunity to attend Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 68 ENROLLED legislative meetings, tour the state capitol, visit with their representatives, and network with other persons; and WHEREAS, prior to visiting the capitol, teens are provided with a curriculum designed to encourage and prepare them to learn who their representatives are, understand the issues that affect youth, become familiar with the structure of their state government, and understand the issues that affect their local communities and the state as a whole. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Thursday, April 25, 2019, as Jack and Jill Day at the state capitol and does hereby extend gratitude to Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, for its manifold contributions to the children and youth of the great state of Louisiana.
