HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 74

CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences on the death of Melvin "Coach" Stringer
1	A RESOLUTION
2To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Melvin
3 "Coach" Stringer.
4 WHEREAS, the members of the House of Representatives were saddened to learn
5of the death on April 19, 2019, of Melvin "Coach" Stringer, at the age of eighty-six; and 
6 WHEREAS, born in Baton Rouge to parents Arthur and Thelma Neldare, Melvin
7graduated from Southern University Lab School in 1953; and
8 WHEREAS, Melvin answered the call of duty to his country and served in the
9Korean War from 1953-1955; and
10 WHEREAS, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in secondary education from
11Southern University; and 
12 WHEREAS, a passionate teacher, Melvin accepted employment at Scotlandville
13Senior High School and later Baker High School, where he taught social studies, driver's
14education, and coached track and field teams; and
15 WHEREAS, under the tutelage of Coach Stringer, the teams would go on to win
16several awards for high achievement; and
17 WHEREAS, he was a member of The American Legion Post 502 in Scotlandville,
18Southern University Track and Field Association, and Louisiana State University Track and
19Field Association; and
20 WHEREAS, those who will forever cherish his memory are sons, Theadrick Stringer
21and Keith Phillips; daughter, Rhonda Randall; sisters, Ardra Neldare and Adrian Neldare

1Mayes; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a host of extended family,
2students, and friends. 
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express their deepest sympathy and most sincere
5condolences on the death of Melvin "Coach" Stringer; does hereby acknowledge his life's
6work with the youth of East Baton Rouge Parish in schools and recreation; and does hereby
7extend best prayers and hopes for peace and comfort to those who remain. 
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
9family of Melvin Stringer.
