2019 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 120 BY SENATOR DONAHUE AND REPRESENTATI VES BOUIE AND GAROFALO A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend and congratulate the Holy Cross Tigers soccer team for winning the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Division II State Championship. WHEREAS, the Holy Cross Tigers soccer team faced off against Lakeshore in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Allstate Sugar Bowl Division II Championship game at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin Cajun soccer facility on February 21, 2019, for the third meeting between the District 6-11 foes this season, Holy Cross registering shutouts in both games; and WHEREAS, Holy Cross Tigers soccer team was playing for its second state title and Lakeshore for its first state title; and WHEREAS, after eighty minutes of regulation play, Holy Cross and Lakeshore were tied, 0-0; and WHEREAS, Holy Cross and Lakeshore competed in the first overtime for an additional twenty minutes of soccer; Holy Cross drew first blood when Sinjin Mills scored in the eighty-second minute for a 1-0 lead; in the eighty-sixth minute Lakeshore scored to tie the game 1-1 and the score stood until the end of the first overtime; and WHEREAS, adding ten minutes to the clock the game entered a sudden death overtime in which the first team to score wins; and WHEREAS, upon expiration of the additional ten minutes, the score remained tied at 1-1 and with the state championship on the line, the game proceeded to penalty kicks, with five players from each team taking shots against each other's goalies; and WHEREAS, the Holy Cross Tigers soccer team won their second consecutive state title by defeating district foe Lakeshore 3-1 in penalty kicks, with Ethan Garvey, Nolan Heitmeier, and Carlos Castellanos each scoring for Holy Cross; Thomas Dugal was named most outstanding player of the championship match with his excellent play at the net; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 120 ENROLLED WHEREAS, the Holy Cross Tigers soccer team completed their season ranked number one the entire season, finishing with a 23 - 4 - 3 record, and captured the district title along with their second state championship; and WHEREAS, several Tigers earned postseason honors as Ethan Garvey, Chad Cadiere, Thomas Dugal, and Nolan Heitmeier were all selected to the All-State Team and All-Metro Team; and WHEREAS, Chad Cadiere was named Defensive Player of the Year for Division H; Tigers Head Coach, Matt Millet, was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row; and WHEREAS, two Holy Cross Tigers soccer players have committed to play at the college level - Ethan Garvey for Evansville University and Josue Fuentes for Delta State University; and WHEREAS, Headmaster Sean Martin, Principal Eric Desormeaux, Athletic Director Guy LeCompte, Director of Soccer Stuart Hayers, Head Coach Matt Millet along with all Holy Cross Tigers and their fans can celebrate an outstanding soccer season in the achievement of the highest sports honor in the state, back-to-back state championships in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division II boys' soccer. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the Holy Cross Tigers soccer team for its outstanding soccer season culminating in winning the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Division II State Championship. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Holy Cross Athletic Director Guy LeCompte, Director of Soccer Stuart Hayers, and Head Coach Matt Millet.
