Memorializes Congress to provide adequate funding to the United States Army Corps of Engineers for the completion of deepening the Mississippi River Ship Channel to fifty feet. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To memorialize the Congress of the United States to provide adequate funding to the United 3 States Army Corps of Engineers for the completion of the proposed project to deepen 4 the Mississippi River Ship Channel to fifty feet. 5 WHEREAS, deepening of the Mississippi River Ship Channel to fifty feet is a 6 historic infrastructure project that is vital to our nation's economic prosperity; and 7 WHEREAS, the expansion of the Panama Canal has made it imperative to improve 8 access on the Mississippi River for larger Post-Panamax ships for export and import of 9 goods; and 10 WHEREAS, the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the state of Louisiana 11 desire deepening the Mississippi River Ship Channel to fifty feet; and 12 WHEREAS, the project is approved and awaiting federal funding; and 13 WHEREAS, thirty-one states will receive economic benefits by the enhanced water 14 carrying capacity of the Mississippi River Ship Channel, also known as the gateway to 15 America's Heartland; and 16 WHEREAS, the Mississippi River Ship Channel and tributaries currently account 17 for seven hundred fifty billion dollars of the nation's economy and two million four hundred 18 thousand jobs; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 131 SLS 19RS-2431 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, each new additional foot of water draft will account for an additional 2 one million dollars in cargo on a vessel. 3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana memorializes 4 the Congress of the United States to provide adequate funding to the United States Army 5 Corps of Engineers for the completion of the proposed project to deepen the Mississippi 6 River Ship Channel to fifty feet. 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution shall be transmitted 8 to the secretary of the United States Senate and the clerk of the United States House of 9 Representatives, to each member of the Louisiana delegation to the United States Congress, 10 the assistant secretary of the Army for Civil Works, the commander of the United States 11 Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District, and the governor.
