Commends Philip Timothy upon receiving the 2019 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend and congratulate Philip Timothy on being selected for the 2019 Distinguished 3 Service Award in Sports Journalism and on being named to the 2019 Louisiana 4 Sports Hall of Fame. 5 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year 6 collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of 7 sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talent worthy of being named to the hall 8 of fame; and 9 WHEREAS, the Distinguished Service Award is the most prestigious honor offered 10 to sports media in the state and recipients are carefully chosen after an extensive deliberation 11 by a thirty-member expert panel based on their professional accomplishments in local, state, 12 regional, and national arenas; and 13 WHEREAS, the inspirational Philip Timothy is a recipient of the 2019 Distinguished 14 Service Award in Sports Journalism and a member of the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of 15 Fame Induction Class; and 16 WHEREAS, after graduating from Tioga High School, Philip Timothy began his 17 career covering youth and high school sports while enrolled as a sophomore at Northwestern 18 State University; and Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 62 SLS 19RS-777 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, he spent the early part of his career at many small weekly papers, where 2 he not only wrote stories and took photos but also laid out the sports section and even 3 delivered newspapers; and 4 WHEREAS, his dedication and versatility caught the attention of several larger area 5 newspapers and he rose from a sports writer to executive sports director for the Lafayette 6 Daily Advertiser, assistant sports editor at the Alexandria Town Talk, outdoor editor for 7 Gannett's statewide GOoutdoors and Louisiana Hunt & Fish, and editor of Gannett's niche 8 products; and 9 WHEREAS, he has served as an inspiration and mentor to dozens of current and 10 former sports writers and was greatly influential in the early stages of developing the 11 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Museum; and 12 WHEREAS, Philip Timothy has won more than 80 national, regional, and state 13 awards and more than 65 Louisiana Sports Writers Association awards; and 14 WHEREAS, his extensive career also earned him the 2004 Louisiana Wildlife 15 Federation Communicator of the Year Award, the 2005 Louisiana High School Athletic 16 Association Prep Journalism Award, and a special honor from the Louisiana High School 17 Athletic Association/Louisiana High School Coaches Association; and 18 WHEREAS, for the past 13 years, while working for the statewide Baptist Message, 19 Philip Timothy has still found time to cover central Louisiana sports as a freelance writer; 20 and 21 WHEREAS, Philip Timothy's inspirational career has rightly earned him the 2019 22 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and a place among the many greats in the 23 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 24 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 25 commend and congratulate Philip Timothy for receiving the 2019 Distinguished Service 26 Award in Sports Journalism and for being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame 27 Induction Class. 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 29 Philip Timothy.
