2019 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 62 BY SENATORS LONG AND RISER A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend and congratulate Philip Timothy on being selected for the 2019 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talent worthy of being named to the hall of fame; and WHEREAS, the Distinguished Service Award is the most prestigious honor offered to sports media in the state and recipients are carefully chosen after an extensive deliberation by a thirty-member expert panel based on their professional accomplishments in local, state, regional, and national arenas; and WHEREAS, the inspirational Philip Timothy is a recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and a member of the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class; and WHEREAS, after graduating from Tioga High School, Philip Timothy began his career covering youth and high school sports while enrolled as a sophomore at Northwestern State University; and WHEREAS, he spent the early part of his career at many small weekly papers, where he not only wrote stories and took photos but also laid out the sports section and even delivered newspapers; and WHEREAS, his dedication and versatility caught the attention of several larger area newspapers and he rose from a sports writer to executive sports director for the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, assistant sports editor at the Alexandria Town Talk, outdoor editor for Gannett's statewide GOoutdoors and Louisiana Hunt & Fish, and editor of Gannett's niche products; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 62 ENROLLED WHEREAS, he has served as an inspiration and mentor to dozens of current and former sports writers and was greatly influential in the early stages of developing the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Museum; and WHEREAS, Philip Timothy has won more than 80 national, regional, and state awards and more than 65 Louisiana Sports Writers Association awards; and WHEREAS, his extensive career also earned him the 2004 Louisiana Wildlife Federation Communicator of the Year Award, the 2005 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Prep Journalism Award, and a special honor from the Louisiana High School Athletic Association/Louisiana High School Coaches Association; and WHEREAS, for the past 13 years, while working for the statewide Baptist Message, Philip Timothy has still found time to cover central Louisiana sports as a freelance writer; and WHEREAS, Philip Timothy's inspirational career has rightly earned him the 2019 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and a place among the many greats in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Philip Timothy for receiving the 2019 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and for being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.
