SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 64

COMMENDATIONS. Commends Charles Smith on being named to the 2019 Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame.
1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To commend Charles Smith on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
3 WHEREAS, Charles Smith successfully coached thirty-three seasons of the Peabody
4 Magnet High School boys basketball program; and
5 WHEREAS, with a 1,008 - 176 (.851) career record, he is just the fourth boys
6 basketball coach in Louisiana history to win one thousand games while claiming his fourth
7 state runner up finish in 2017-2018; and
8 WHEREAS, Charles Smith has led the Warhorses to seven state titles (1991, 2000,
9 2004, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2017); and
10 WHEREAS, he was an assistant on the school's first state championship team in
11 1979; and
12 WHEREAS, Charles Smith's teams have won twenty-eight district championships,
13 including nineteen in a row in a streak that ended in 2014; and
14 WHEREAS, Charles Smith has guided the Peabody Magnet High School boys
15 basketball team to the Top 28 eighteen times; and
16 WHEREAS, he has never lost in the first round of the playoffs and has won at least
17 twenty-two games every season since 1988; and
18 WHEREAS, Charles Smith was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association

1 Coach of the Year four times, most recently in 2016-2017, and ESPN's National Coach of
2 the year in 2010; and
3 WHEREAS, his 2004 and 2010 teams went undefeated and finished the year
4 nationally ranked; and
5 WHEREAS, more than sixty of Charles Smith's players have earned athletic
6 scholarships in his three decade career.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
8 commend Charles Smith on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
10 Charles Smith.
