2019 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 64 BY SENATORS LONG AND RISER A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend Charles Smith on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, Charles Smith successfully coached thirty-three seasons of the Peabody Magnet High School boys basketball program; and WHEREAS, with a 1,008 - 176 (.851) career record, he is just the fourth boys basketball coach in Louisiana history to win one thousand games while claiming his fourth state runner up finish in 2017-2018; and WHEREAS, Charles Smith has led the Warhorses to seven state titles (1991, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2017); and WHEREAS, he was an assistant on the school's first state championship team in 1979; and WHEREAS, Charles Smith's teams have won twenty-eight district championships, including nineteen in a row in a streak that ended in 2014; and WHEREAS, Charles Smith has guided the Peabody Magnet High School boys basketball team to the Top 28 eighteen times; and WHEREAS, he has never lost in the first round of the playoffs and has won at least twenty-two games every season since 1988; and WHEREAS, Charles Smith was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year four times, most recently in 2016-2017, and ESPN's National Coach of the Year in 2010; and WHEREAS, his 2004 and 2010 teams went undefeated and finished the year nationally ranked; and WHEREAS, more than sixty of Charles Smith's players have earned athletic scholarships in his three-decade career. Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 64 ENROLLED THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Charles Smith on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
