Commends Roger Cador on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction class. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend Roger Cador on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame 3 induction class. 4 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year 5 collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of 6 sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talents worthy of being named to the hall 7 of fame; and 8 WHEREAS, Roger Cador played baseball and basketball at Southern University in 9 Baton Rouge, Louisiana, leading the Jaguars in hitting in his junior season at .393; and 10 WHEREAS, he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the tenth round of the 1973 11 Major League Baseball Draft and played five seasons with the Braves organization, reaching 12 Class-AAA in his final season of 1977 as an outfielder; and 13 WHEREAS, Mr. Cador returned to Southern University in 1978 as an assistant 14 baseball coach, moved to assistant basketball coach of the Jaguars in 1980, and remained in 15 that position for four seasons before earning the head coaching job of the baseball team in 16 1985; and 17 WHEREAS, his accomplishments include conference championships, thirteen 18 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year awards, National Collegiate Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 80 SLS 19RS-776 ORIGINAL 1 Athletic Association (NCAA) regional appearances, and three NCAA play-in appearances; 2 and 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Cador has also produced thirty-five players who played 4 professional sports or became coaches, umpires, or scouts, including twenty-three players 5 drafted from 2001 to 2004; and 6 WHEREAS, he completed his career at Southern University with fourteen SWAC 7 titles, eleven NCAA tournament appearances, and two black national titles in 2003 and 8 2005; and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Cador also holds the distinctions of having coached the first Golden 10 Spikes Award winner to have played at a predominantly black school, Rickie Weeks Jr., in 11 2003, and the first NCAA Division I tournament game win by a black school; and 12 WHEREAS, the successful career of Roger Cador has rightly earned him a place 13 among the many greats in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 15 commend and congratulate Roger Cador on being named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Hall 16 of Fame induction class. 17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 18 Roger Cador.
