SLS 19RS-1476 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 89 BY SENATOR CLAITOR AND REPRESENTATIVE STEVE CARTER COMMENDATIONS. Commends Syed Akbar Zamin upon being named a 2019 Goldwater Scholar. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend Louisiana State University student Syed Akbar Zamin of Baton Rouge, 3 Louisiana, upon being named a 2019 Goldwater Scholar. 4 WHEREAS, Goldwater Scholars are awarded one- and two-year $7,500 stipends to 5 pursue undergraduate research in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, or 6 engineering; and 7 WHEREAS, Syed Akbar Zamin, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a junior studying 8 Biomedical Engineering in the LSU College of Engineering and, under the leadership of 9 Myungwoong Kim and Jangwook Jung, Zamin's research focuses on the characterization of 10 a new biomaterial of collagen-lignin; lignin has the ability to modulate mechanical 11 properties without creating the issues of cytotoxicity and immunogenicity; and 12 WHEREAS, after graduation, Zamin plans to pursue a combined MD/PhD in 13 biomedical engineering; and 14 WHEREAS, Congress established the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence 15 in Education Program in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater who served his country 16 for fifty-six years as a soldier and statesman, including thirty years of service in the United 17 States Senate; and 18 WHEREAS, the purpose of the program is to provide a continuing source of highly Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 89 SLS 19RS-1476 ORIGINAL 1 qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college 2 students who intend to pursue careers in these fields; and 3 WHEREAS, according to the Goldwater Scholarship Foundation, this is the first time 4 in its history the Foundation will be naming 496 scholars in a single competition year which 5 became possible with support from Congress and in collaboration with the Department of 6 Defense National Defense Education Program; and 7 WHEREAS, founded in 1908, the LSU College of Engineering offers eleven 8 undergraduate degree programs and confers approximately six hundred fifty bachelor's 9 degrees per year, ranking it in the top ten percent nationally for graduates, and faculty 10 members engage in education, research, and commercialization with a strategic focus on 11 research indigenous to Louisiana: energy, manufacturing, natural & built infrastructure, 12 computation and biotechnology; and 13 WHEREAS, Mr. Zamin was chosen from a group of one thousand two hundred 14 twenty-three students from four hundred forty-three institutions nominated for a Goldwater 15 Scholarship. 16 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 17 commend Syed Akbar Zamin upon being named a 2019 Goldwater Scholar; does hereby 18 recognize the outstanding accomplishments of this young scholar; does hereby express 19 enduring appreciation for the pride and honor that he brings to the state of Louisiana; and 20 does wish him full measures of happiness and success in all his endeavors. 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 22 Syed Akbar Zamin.
