2019 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 108 BY SENATOR HEWITT A RESOLUTION To designate May 8, 2019, as NASA Day at the state capitol, acknowledge the accomplishments of NASA and the remarkable technical and scientific contributions made to the state and nation, and recognize the work of the distinguished engineers, technicians, management, and support personnel working at the Michoud Assembly Facility. WHEREAS, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Marshall Space Flight Center and Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans have been instrumental in the success of the United States Space Program during the previous six decades, manufacturing in Louisiana the Saturn rockets for the Apollo program and the external tanks for the Space Shuttle program from the 1970s until the program was retired in 2011; and WHEREAS, NASA is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, with Marshall and Michoud building the Space Launch System (SLS), the most powerful rocket ever built, allowing America's leadership in space to continue to enable human exploration of the moon, and to lead future missions to deep space with an eye toward Mars; and WHEREAS, NASA and the state of Louisiana share a commitment to promote the growth of a well-trained aerospace workforce and sustain the world class manufacturing capabilities at Michoud Assembly Facility, where NASA is building the SLS and the Orion Multipurpose Crew Vehicle that will usher in a new era of exploration and discovery, taking mankind further than it has been before; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 108 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Marshall and Michoud have in the last year facilitated the signing of 66 partnership agreements with a value exceeding $23.7 million in areas such as engine development, materials testing, wind tunnel testing, and other engineering services, while also managing 281 active Space Act Agreements with industry, academia, and other government agencies; and WHEREAS, Michoud continues a proud heritage of groundbreaking advancements in human space exploration while locally supporting more than 5,000 jobs, generating $630 million in economic impact, and sourcing $116 million in government contracts; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Louisiana are indeed exceedingly proud of their state's critical role in the United States Space Program and the tremendous advances in space exploration and scientific progress its cooperation with NASA has produced. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana that May 8, 2019, is hereby designated as NASA Day at the state capitol; the accomplishments of NASA and the remarkable technical and scientific contributions made to the state of Louisiana and the United States of America are hereby acknowledged, and the work of the distinguished engineers, technicians, management, and support personnel working at the Michoud Assembly Facility, all of whom have achieved distinction beyond measure, is hereby recognized.
