2019 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 111 BY SENATORS HEWITT, DONAHUE AND MIZELL A RESOLUTION To commend Leadership Northshore and welcome the 2019 class to the state capitol. WHEREAS, Leadership Northshore is an innovative program designed to prepare individuals and emerging leaders for leadership positions in local government, business, and community affairs; and WHEREAS, it is an issue-oriented leadership development program that informs, motivates, and increases the awareness of selected participants through seminars and interaction with community decision makers; and WHEREAS, the purpose of Leadership Northshore is to provide a forum for, and increase the awareness of, potential leaders by giving them an intense course which encompasses a broad scope of community concerns while providing leadership and effective communication skills; and WHEREAS, Leadership Northshore graduated its first class in 1991 and since that time more than five hundred fifty students have completed the program, and as St. Tammany Parish grows and the community becomes more complex and demanding, there is an increasing need to train responsible and informed leaders; and WHEREAS, in addition to learning specific leadership skills and gaining a broad exposure to the community, participants also meet peers in other fields and form contacts which will benefit their volunteer and professional activities; and WHEREAS, participants provide qualified and trained leadership for public and private agencies, organizations, planning bodies, and commissions, motivate and encourage participants to assume leadership roles in community affairs, and work to broaden the volunteer leadership base; and WHEREAS, they also develop a sense of community leadership by exploring the concept of leadership, helping participants identify their own leadership style, and introducing participants to leadership techniques; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 111 ENROLLED WHEREAS, the objectives of Leadership Northshore include developing a renewed sense of enthusiasm and "can do" attitude in the community, identifying and selecting highly motivated, emerging, or existing leaders in business, government, and the community, to participate in the program, and systematically educating and challenging the participants as to the needs and opportunities of the community and the dynamics of social and economic change; and WHEREAS, other objectives include developing an esprit de corps among participants to provide a common ground for working together on present and future community projects, creating a dialogue and rapport between the participants and existing community leadership, and stimulating an increased level of commitment and participation in the community; and WHEREAS, class projects for 2019 included "Never Alone", a suicide awareness campaign; "Let it Grow", a vegetable garden at the Boys and Girls Club of Slidell; and "Food 4 Kids St. Tammany", a project dedicated to reducing childhood hunger for school age children on the weekends and throughout the year; and WHEREAS, Leadership Northshore has earned a deserved reputation as an exceptional program, as a community inspiration earning the area a reputation for both innovation and strong leadership, and as a program that has trained both leaders and innovators, while maintaining the essential aspects of values and culture that, in Louisiana, result in a culture and lifestyle that looks to the future while it clings to much of its rich cultural diversity. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Leadership Northshore and welcome the members of the 2019 class of future leaders to the Louisiana State Capitol.
