SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 126

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. Requests the state Department of Education to develop
materials for and promote implementation of programs to teach necessary, basic life skills
to all public high school seniors.

2 To urge and request the state Department of Education to develop materials for and promote
3 implementation of programs to teach necessary, basic life skills to all public high
4 school seniors.
5 WHEREAS, Louisiana high schools are working to ensure each student graduates
6 career and college ready; and
7 WHEREAS, this focus has resulted in an emphasis on teaching complex skills; and
8 WHEREAS, the intense core course regime and occupational driven electives leaves
9 little time to teach students necessary life skills such as changing a tire, sewing on a button,
10 cooking a basic meal, reconciling a check book, or how to interact during a traffic stop; and
11 WHEREAS, many young adults report that lacking these skills leads to them feeling
12 stressed and unprepared to live as independent adults; and
13 WHEREAS, schools in other states have begun to offer "adulting" days to teach
14 twelfth graders necessary, basic life skills; and
15 WHEREAS, feedback from those programs has shown that both the student
16 participants and their parents feel more prepared for the student to leave home.
17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
18 does hereby request the state Department of Education to develop materials for and promote

2 seniors.
3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the
4 state superintendent of education.
