SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 130
BY SENATOR BISHOP 
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH.  Designates Wednesday, May 15, 2019, as New Orleans
Day at the state capitol and commends the city of New Orleans.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To designate Wednesday, May 15, 2019, as New Orleans Day at the state capitol, and
3 commends the city of New Orleans.
4 WHEREAS, Louisiana is nationally and internally recognized as perhaps the most
5 unique state in the nation; with an amazing variety of natural and cultural attractions and
6 significant historical sites, the city of New Orleans plays a vital role in the distinction that
7 Louisiana enjoys; and
8 WHEREAS, the city of New Orleans was founded in 1718 by Jean Baptiste
9 Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville; it is called the Crescent City because of its location on a sharp
10 bend, or crescent, on the Mississippi River; the original town was given a French name,
11 Vieux Carré, which translates to French Quarter in English; and 
12 WHEREAS, Louisiana is the very fabric of the city of New Orleans; and
13 WHEREAS, the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana recognizes the global
14 prominence of the city of New Orleans as a world class city and home to one of America's
15 largest ports; and
16 WHEREAS, the Senate also recognizes the many economic, cultural, and artistic
17 contributions of the city of New Orleans to the state of Louisiana; and
18 WHEREAS, it is the people of many cultural backgrounds who have contributed to

1 the wonderful mixture of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that makes New Orleans the
2 remarkably distinctive place it is today.
3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
4 does hereby designate Wednesday, May 15, 2019, as New Orleans Day at the state capitol,
5 does hereby commend the city of New Orleans, and does hereby urge and request that this
6 special day be observed with appropriate recognition of the unique culture and history of the
7 Crescent City.
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
9 Honorable John Bel Edwards, governor of the state of Louisiana, and the Honorable
10 LaToya Cantrell, mayor of the city of New Orleans.
