2019 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 130 BY SENATORS BISHOP, APPEL, CARTER, HEWITT, MORRELL AND PETERSON A RESOLUTION To designate Wednesday, May 15, 2019, as New Orleans Day at the state capitol, and commends the city of New Orleans. WHEREAS, Louisiana is nationally and internally recognized as perhaps the most unique state in the nation; with an amazing variety of natural and cultural attractions and significant historical sites, the city of New Orleans plays a vital role in the distinction that Louisiana enjoys; and WHEREAS, the city of New Orleans was founded in 1718 by Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville; it is called the Crescent City because of its location on a sharp bend, or crescent, on the Mississippi River; the original town was given a French name, Vieux Carré, which translates to French Quarter in English; and WHEREAS, Louisiana is the very fabric of the city of New Orleans; and WHEREAS, the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana recognizes the global prominence of the city of New Orleans as a world class city and home to one of America's largest ports; and WHEREAS, the Senate also recognizes the many economic, cultural, and artistic contributions of the city of New Orleans to the state of Louisiana; and WHEREAS, it is the people of many cultural backgrounds who have contributed to the wonderful mixture of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that makes New Orleans the remarkably distinctive place it is today. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Wednesday, May 15, 2019, as New Orleans Day at the state capitol, does hereby commend the city of New Orleans, and does hereby urge and request that this special day be observed with appropriate recognition of the unique culture and history of the Crescent City.
