SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 141

COMMENDATIONS. Commends the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball
team on winning the LHSAA 5A Division I state championship.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball team on winning their
3 third straight Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) 5A Division I
4 state championship.
5 WHEREAS, the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball team, called the
6 Hornets, defeated St. Augustine High School with a score of seventy-three to fifty-three in
7 the final game at the Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on March 9, 2019; and
8 WHEREAS, with this recent victory, the Hornets have earned their sixth title during
9 an unprecedented run of ten consecutive title-game appearances under the leadership of
10 Head Coach Carlos Sample and assistant coaches Jeremy Noah, Joshua Washington,
11 Deshawn Washington, Brandon Ricard, and Melissa Washington; and
12 WHEREAS, the talented Hornets team of eleven members includes six juniors:
13 Reece Beekman, Tai'reon Joseph, Morantz James, David Thomas III, Carvell Teasett and
14 Jonathan Horton; one sophomore: Zaheem Jackson; and four freshmen: Rayvon Smith,
15 Neiman Sullen, Marlon Gunn Jr., and Jalen Johnson; and
16 WHEREAS, the Hornets were dedicated "to proving they are a winning team by
17 playing hard" thus each member merits recognition and congratulations for his team
18 performance and competitive spirit throughout the season and the tournament; and

1 WHEREAS, Coach Sample said, "He and the team challenge each other every day
2 as they proved the game is not a sprint, but a marathon. These young men played thirty-two
3 hard minutes. I'm just proud of these guys"; and
4 WHEREAS, the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball team is
5 recognized for the well-deserved accolades earned throughout the season and showcasing
6 the extraordinary athletic abilities they have displayed, particularly at the most difficult level
7 of high school competition.
8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
9 does hereby express its sincere congratulations to the Scotlandville Magnet High School
10 boys basketball team on winning the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA)
11 5A Division I state championship.
12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
13 Carlos Sample, head coach of the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball team
14 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
