SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 141

A RESOLUTION
To commend the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball team on winning their
third straight Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) 5A Division I
state championship.
WHEREAS, the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball team, called the
Hornets, defeated St. Augustine High School with a score of seventy-three to fifty-three in
the final game at the Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on March 9, 2019; and
WHEREAS, with this recent victory, the Hornets have earned their sixth title during
an unprecedented run of ten consecutive title-game appearances under the leadership of
Head Coach Carlos Sample and assistant coaches Jeremy Noah, Joshua Washington,
Deshawn Washington, Brandon Ricard, and Melissa Washington; and
WHEREAS, the talented Hornets team of eleven members includes six juniors:
Reece Beekman, Tai'reon Joseph, Morantz James, David Thomas III, Carvell Teasett and
Jonathan Horton; one sophomore: Zaheem Jackson; and four freshmen: Rayvon Smith,
Neiman Sullen, Marlon Gunn Jr., and Jalen Johnson; and
WHEREAS, the Hornets were dedicated "to proving they are a winning team by
playing hard" thus each member merits recognition and congratulations for his team
performance and competitive spirit throughout the season and the tournament; and
WHEREAS, Coach Sample said, "He and the team challenge each other every day
as they proved the game is not a sprint, but a marathon. These young men played thirty-two
hard minutes. I'm just proud of these guys"; and
WHEREAS, the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball team is
recognized for the well-deserved accolades earned throughout the season and showcasing
the extraordinary athletic abilities they have displayed, particularly at the most difficult level
of high school competition.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby express its sincere congratulations to the Scotlandville Magnet High School
boys basketball team on winning the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA)
5A Division I state championship.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Carlos Sample, head coach of the Scotlandville Magnet High School boys basketball team
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
