2019 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 150 BY SENATOR PEACOCK A RESOLUTION To commend the C. E. Byrd High School boys and girls golf teams on their respective sweeps in the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) State Championships. WHEREAS, these outstanding student athletes played with the confidence of seasoned veterans in the spring of 2019, performing at the highest levels of excellence; and WHEREAS, the boys team claimed its fifth state team title in the last six years by getting two-under 70 scores from Jake Marler and Payne Johnson, an even-par 72 from Porter May, and a three-over 75 from Hayes Hubble for a one-under 287 team score in the final round at The Wetlands; and WHEREAS, on the second day of tournament play, the boys team miraculously overcame a fifteen stroke deficit to win the Division I championship; and WHEREAS, the Lady Yellow Jackets squad, composed of Gillian Cole, Sydney Moss, and Alexis Lee played at Les Vieux Chenes; and although the number of golfers on the girls team may have been small, these competitors were fearless on the greens and they also came away with the girls team title in Division I; and WHEREAS, Gillian Cole rallied with a 37 on the back nine to shoot 80-80 for her two-day total, while Sydney Moss shot 90-87, and Alexis Lee shot 95-99, leading the girls team to a victory over Zachary by five strokes; and WHEREAS, each player's expertise was enhanced by the guidance of Coach Meredith Duncan, who coaches both teams; she is an exceptional golfer in her own right as an All-American at LSU, the U.S. Women's Amateur Champion for 2001, and a competitor on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) circuit for nearly a decade; and WHEREAS, Coach Duncan has guided the girls team through joint practices with the boys team to improve their performance, competitive edge, and to develop an athletic level all their own; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 150 ENROLLED WHEREAS, members of the 2019 state championship boys team include Brooks Belanger, Callaway Gosslee, Hayes Hubble, Payne Johnson, Peyton Johnson, Jake Marler, Porter May, Aubrey Nation, Landrum Wallace, Major Wallace, and Cooper Wayda; and WHEREAS, at the end of tournament play, the boys team had amassed some impressive numbers in the individual placement standings in the Top 20 with Jake Marler 3rd, Payne Johnson 8th, Porter May 12th, and Hayes Hubble 15th; and WHEREAS, both Yellow Jacket teams put together an impressive show of athletic prowess and mental confidence as they successfully competed in the 2019 LHSAA Golf Tournament, and both teams came away victorious in Division I play; and WHEREAS, these amazing accomplishments were made possible by the enthusiasm of Coach Duncan and the many supporters who have contributed their time and energy to the success of the golf program; and WHEREAS, these student athletes have demonstrated leadership, maturity, and motivational skills that have produced extraordinary results and brought golf at C. E. Byrd to lofty heights; and WHEREAS, the boys and girls teams upheld the proud traditions of golf during the 2019 season and C. E. Byrd alumni and fans recognize the immense pride and distinguished honor that these state championships bring to the school, community, and state. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the C. E. Byrd High School boys and girls golf teams on their respective Division I Louisiana High School Athletic Association state championships. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend best wishes to the players, coach, and sponsors involved in this outstanding golf program as they celebrate an exceptional season and prepare for continued success in the future.
