SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 155
BY SENATORS LONG AND LUNEAU 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Rapides Parish for being declared by the Governor's
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports as the Most Physically Fit parish in the state.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Rapides Parish youth upon winning the Elementary State Championship
3 Fitness meet for the fourth consecutive year.
4 WHEREAS, Rapides Parish won the twenty-fifth annual Elementary State
5 Championship for the fourth consecutive year at a meet held in Alexandria, Louisiana, at
6 Alexandria High School; and
7 WHEREAS, the students train from the beginning of the school year in the events
8 such as, the shuttle run, pull-ups, fifty yard dash, six hundred yard run, standing long jump,
9 and sit-ups readying themselves for the spring competition and preliminary meets that start
10 in the spring; and
11 WHEREAS, in this year's meet, held as part of the "Governor's Games," Lafayette
12 Parish finished second, Caddo Parish placed third, and Livingston Parish finished fourth in
13 the competition that included twenty-five parishes and more than two hundred thousand
14 students across the state; and
15 WHEREAS, a Miss Fitness and a Mr. Fitness are chosen, as well, being the highest
16 scoring individual in each gender category and Aubree Davis of Rapides Parish was crowned
17 "Miss Fitness" by scoring six hundred fifty points and outscoring all other girls, while Jacob
18 Deal, also of Rapides, won the "Mr. Fitness" crown by scoring six hundred fifty-six points,

1 the highest total among the boys; and
2 WHEREAS, the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sport, which hosts the
3 annual meet, reports a significant increase in the physical fitness levels of elementary school
4 children in the last three years from the twenty-five parishes who participated in the 2019
5 annual meet; and
6 WHEREAS, in the competition, the top two boys and the top two girls from each
7 parish must survive their initial competition from their schools and compete against the other
8 students in their parish before they reach the championship meet; and
9 WHEREAS, the fitness tests are included in the President's Challenge and are
10 intended to measure over-all fitness, not extraordinary athletic ability, and this competition
11 is only one of many that are included in the Governor's Games, which are held in cities
12 around the state and include many Olympic sports, such as track and field, basketball,
13 gymnastics, girls' softball, youth baseball, tennis, and many more; and
14 WHEREAS, with concern about childhood obesity and the long-term effects of a
15 sedentary life, the elementary school fitness challenge initiates the attitude in these children
16 that fitness is both fun and worthwhile, hoping to set patterns of activity that will last a
17 lifetime.
18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
19 does hereby commend Rapides Parish youth upon winning the Elementary State
20 Championship Fitness meet for the fourth consecutive year.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
22 Rapides Parish School Board.
