SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 155
BY SENATORS LONG AND LUNEAU 
A RESOLUTION
To commend Rapides Parish youth upon winning the Elementary State Championship
Fitness meet for the fourth consecutive year.
WHEREAS, Rapides Parish won the twenty-fifth annual Elementary State
Championship for the fourth consecutive year at a meet held in Alexandria, Louisiana, at
Alexandria High School; and
WHEREAS, the students train from the beginning of the school year in events such
as, the shuttle run, pull-ups, fifty yard dash, six hundred yard run, standing long jump, and
sit-ups, readying themselves for the spring competition and preliminary meets that start in
the spring; and
WHEREAS, in this year's meet, held as part of the "Governor's Games", Lafayette
Parish finished second, Caddo Parish placed third, and Livingston Parish finished fourth in
the competition that included twenty-five parishes and more than two hundred thousand
students across the state; and
WHEREAS, a Miss Fitness and a Mr. Fitness are chosen, as well, being the highest
scoring individual in each gender category, and Aubree Davis of Rapides Parish was
crowned "Miss Fitness" by scoring six hundred fifty points and outscoring all other girls,
while Jacob Deal, also of Rapides, won the "Mr. Fitness" crown by scoring six hundred fifty-
six points, the highest total among the boys; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, which hosts the
annual meet, reports a significant increase in the physical fitness levels of elementary school
children in the last three years from the twenty-five parishes who participated in the 2019
annual meet; and
WHEREAS, in the competition, the top two boys and the top two girls from each
parish must survive the initial competition from their schools and compete against the other
students in their parish before they reach the championship meet; and

WHEREAS, the fitness tests are included in the President's Challenge and are
intended to measure overall fitness, not extraordinary athletic ability, and this competition
is only one of many that is included in the Governor's Games, which are held in cities around
the state and include many Olympic sports such as track and field, basketball, gymnastics,
girls softball, youth baseball, tennis, and many more; and
WHEREAS, with concern about childhood obesity and the long-term effects of a
sedentary life, the elementary school fitness challenge initiates the attitude in these children
that fitness is both fun and worthwhile, hoping to set patterns of activity that will last a
lifetime.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend Rapides Parish youth upon winning the Elementary State
Championship Fitness meet for the fourth consecutive year.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
Rapides Parish School Board.
