SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 24

COMMENDATIONS. Commends Dr. Henry Gremillion, DDS, MAGD, on being elected
chair of the Board of Directors of the American Dental Education Association.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Dr. Henry Gremillion, DDS, MAGD, Dean of the Louisiana State University
3 Health New Orleans School of Dentistry, on being named chairman of the Board of
4 Directors of the American Dental Education Association, the sole national
5 organization representing academic dentistry.
6 WHEREAS, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) is the voice of
7 dental education and consists of twenty thousand members, including students, faculty, staff,
8 and administrators from the United States and Canadian dental schools, many allied and
9 advanced dental education programs, and numerous corporations working in oral health
10 education; and
11 WHEREAS, Dean Gremillion, a 1977 graduate of Louisiana State University (LSU)
12 and a master of the Academy of General Dentistry, is the sixth dean at LSU and the first
13 alumnus to serve in that capacity since the school opened in 1968, beginning his tenure on
14 October 1, 2008; and
15 WHEREAS, the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry is unique among the
16 more than sixty-five dental schools in the United States because it offers degrees in dentistry,
17 dental hygiene, and dental laboratory technology and has a reputation for outstanding
18 clinical education; and

1 WHEREAS, prior to returning to his alma mater as dean, Henry Gremillion began
2 his practice of dentistry shortly after graduating from LSU, practicing general dentistry in
3 Cottonport, Louisiana, from 1977 to 1989; and
4 WHEREAS, Dean Gremillion became a leading citizen of this small Louisiana town,
5 serving on the city council and being named Cottonport Citizen of the Year in 1989, but
6 Henry Gremillion was destined to serve his profession in a broader context, and the
7 education of dentists became his focus as he returned to LSU to complete work on a
8 fellowship; and
9 WHEREAS, leaving Louisiana, Henry Gremillion moved to the University of Florida
10 and in 1991, he became an assistant professor in the department of prosthodontics, he was
11 promoted to associate professor of orthodontics in 1998, to full professor in 2005, and in
12 2008, he was named the Parker R. Mahan Endowed Professor in Orofacial Pain; and
13 WHEREAS, in Florida, Henry Gremillion was also associated with the Parker Mahan
14 Facial Pain Center and its fellowship program in craniomandibular dysfunction, a phrase
15 relating to pain in the jaw associated with chewing muscles; and
16 WHEREAS, while teaching in Florida, Dean Gremillion concentrated his work
17 primarily on the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial
18 pain, his focus of interest throughout his academic career; and
19 WHEREAS, in 2008, Henry Gremillion received the Thaddeus V. Weclew award
20 from the Academy of General Dentistry, awarded to him for his exceptional contributions
21 to the art and science of dentistry and promoting the principles and ideals of the Academy;
22 and
23 WHEREAS, throughout his career in dentistry and dentistry education, Dean
24 Gremillion has received numerous awards, including the Dawson Academy Distinguished
25 Service Award in 2009, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain Distinguished Service
26 Award in 2010, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy Gold Medal Award in 2015; and
27 WHEREAS, the Pierre Fauchard Academy award is presented annually to a dentist
28 in the United States who has made outstanding contributions to the progress and standing
29 of the dental profession, and it is an award of international honor in the dental profession and
30 the organizations' most prestigious and exclusive awards; and

1 WHEREAS, Dean Gremillion is a distinguished dental professor and practitioner,
2 a man held in high esteem by one's harshest critics, his fellow professionals, and his most
3 recent achievement of being named chairman of the board of the American Dental Education
4 Association is but another prestigious recognition of a career of service and contribution to
5 the practice and education of dentistry.
6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
7 does hereby commend Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Dentistry
8 Dean Henry Gremillion, upon his selection as chairman of the board of the country's only
9 national organization representing academic dentistry, the American Dental Education
10 Association.
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
12 Dean Henry Gremillion at the LSU School of Dentistry, LSU Health New Orleans.
