SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 24
BY SENATORS BISHOP AND JOHNS 
A RESOLUTION
To commend Dr. Henry Gremillion, DDS, MAGD, Dean of the Louisiana State University
Health New Orleans School of Dentistry, on being named chairman of the Board of
Directors of the American Dental Education Association, the sole national
organization representing academic dentistry.
WHEREAS, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) is the voice of
dental education and consists of twenty thousand members, including students, faculty, staff,
and administrators from the United States and Canadian dental schools, many allied and
advanced dental education programs, and numerous corporations working in oral health
education; and
WHEREAS, Dean Gremillion, a 1977 graduate of Louisiana State University (LSU)
and a master of the Academy of General Dentistry, is the sixth dean at LSU and the first
alumnus to serve in that capacity since the school opened in 1968, beginning his tenure on
October 1, 2008; and
WHEREAS, the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry is unique among the
more than sixty-five dental schools in the United States because it offers degrees in dentistry,
dental hygiene, and dental laboratory technology and has a reputation for outstanding
clinical education; and 
WHEREAS, prior to returning to his alma mater as dean, Henry Gremillion began
his practice of dentistry shortly after graduating from LSU, practicing general dentistry in
Cottonport, Louisiana, from 1977 to 1989; and
WHEREAS, Dean Gremillion became a leading citizen of this small Louisiana town,
serving on the city council and being named Cottonport Citizen of the Year in 1989, but

Henry Gremillion was destined to serve his profession in a broader context, and the
education of dentists became his focus as he returned to LSU to complete work on a
fellowship; and
WHEREAS, leaving Louisiana, Henry Gremillion moved to the University of Florida
and in 1991, he became an assistant professor in the department of prosthodontics, he was
promoted to associate professor of orthodontics in 1998, to full professor in 2005, and in
2008, he was named the Parker R. Mahan Endowed Professor in Orofacial Pain; and
WHEREAS, in Florida, Henry Gremillion was also associated with the Parker Mahan
Facial Pain Center and its fellowship program in craniomandibular dysfunction, a phrase
relating to pain in the jaw associated with chewing muscles; and
WHEREAS, while teaching in Florida, Dean Gremillion concentrated his work
primarily on the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial
pain, his focus of interest throughout his academic career; and
WHEREAS, in 2008, Henry Gremillion received the Thaddeus V. Weclew Award
from the Academy of General Dentistry, awarded to him for his exceptional contributions
to the art and science of dentistry and promoting the principles and ideals of the Academy;
and
WHEREAS, throughout his career in dentistry and dentistry education, Dean
Gremillion has received numerous awards, including the Dawson Academy Distinguished
Service Award in 2009, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain Distinguished Service
Award in 2010, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy Gold Medal Award in 2015; and
WHEREAS, the Pierre Fauchard Academy award is presented annually to a dentist
in the United States who has made outstanding contributions to the progress and standing
of the dental profession, and it is an award of international honor in the dental profession and
the organizations' most prestigious and exclusive award; and
WHEREAS, Dean Gremillion is a distinguished dental professor and practitioner,
a man held in high esteem by one's harshest critics, his fellow professionals, and his most
recent achievement of being named chairman of the board of the American Dental Education
Association is but another prestigious recognition of a career of service and contribution to
the practice and education of dentistry.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Dentistry
Dean Henry Gremillion, upon his selection as chairman of the board of the country's only
national organization representing academic dentistry, the American Dental Education
Association.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Dean Henry Gremillion at the LSU School of Dentistry, LSU Health New Orleans.
