Welcomes former students of La Salle College in Hong Kong to Louisiana and wishes them well on their reunion tour. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To welcome former students of La Salle College in Hong Kong to the state of Louisiana and 3 to wish them well on their reunion tour. 4 WHEREAS, several former students of La Salle College in Hong Kong have come 5 together to conduct a reunion tour in 2019; and 6 WHEREAS, La Salle College is a boys high school in Hong Kong established by the 7 Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Roman Catholic religious teaching order 8 founded by St. John Baptist de La Salle; and 9 WHEREAS, the foundation for the school was laid in 1930 with the formal 10 inauguration of the college occurring in 1932; and 11 WHEREAS, during World War II, the British designated the college campus as an 12 internment camp for German nationals and later as a relief hospital and, after the British 13 surrender of Hong Kong, the Japanese took over the school building, the Brothers were 14 expelled from the college, and school operations remain suspended until September 1946, 15 during which time the Japanese were believed to use the college as a military hospital; and 16 WHEREAS, La Salle College consistently produces scholars who excel in public 17 examinations and its graduates are consistently accepted by world-renowned universities; 18 and Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 34 SLS 19RS-585 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, in sports, La Salle College has won championships in archery, athletics, 2 badminton, basketball, cross country, fencing, football, hockey, softball, squash, swimming, 3 table tennis, tennis, ten-pin bowling, and volleyball, and has been recognized as the boys 4 secondary school with the best all-round sporting performance in the Hong Kong Island and 5 Kowloon region twenty-six times; and 6 WHEREAS, La Salle College has achieved tremendous results in terms of music as 7 well; and 8 WHEREAS, among the many notable alumni of the school is martial arts movie star 9 Bruce Lee, who started at the school in 1952; and 10 WHEREAS, Louis Kong, who organized this 2019 La Salle Old Boys Reunion Tour, 11 is a member of the Class of 1979, resides in New Orleans, and is a practicing architect in this 12 state who graduated from Tulane University in 1986 with a master's in architecture and a 13 master's of business administration; and 14 WHEREAS, other tour members include: Nick Domingo, Class of 1963, who resides 15 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and is a retired IT manager who graduated from 16 the University of Hong Kong in 1969; Christopher Cheung, Class of 1964, who resides in 17 Monterey Park, California, and is a retired pharmacist now part-time investment speculator 18 and who graduated from ISU School of Pharmacy; Louis Chan, Class of 1965, who resides 19 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and is a dentist who graduated from the University of Alberta 20 in 1973 and 1982; Weddy Chan, Class of 1979, who resides in Hong Kong, SAR, and is the 21 general manager in a trading company and holds a bachelor in business administration - 22 Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1996 and Executive MBA - City University of Hong 23 Kong, 2014, and Andrew Szeto, Class of 1979, who resides in Old Bridge, New Jersey, and 24 is an IT professional who graduated from Queens College, CUNY in 1984. 25 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 26 does hereby welcome former students of La Salle College in Hong Kong to the state of 27 Louisiana and does hereby wish them well on their reunion tour. 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 29 Louis Kong, Nick Domingo, Christopher Cheung, Louis Chan, Weddy Chan, and Andrew 30 Szeto.
