SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 8

COMMENDATIONS. Commends the Grambling State University student athletes, coaches,
athletic director, and university president for outstanding achievements during the 2018-
2019 seasons.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the Grambling State University student athletes, coaches, athletic director, and
3 university president for outstanding achievements during the 2018-2019 seasons.
4 WHEREAS, the Grambling State University Tigers women's and men's basketball
5 teams finished the season advancing to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
6 semifinals after performing at the highest levels of excellence; and
7 WHEREAS, the Grambling State University athletic department and coaching staff
8 demonstrated exemplary leadership earning top honors, including SWAC women's soccer
9 Coach of the Year, Justin Wagar; Skip Professor Man of the Year finalist , Donte Jackson,
10 for his work with men's basketball; and Coach Freddie Murray for cultivating all-conference
11 honors students for multiple years; and
12 WHEREAS, Grambling State University linebacker, De'Arius Christmas, earned
13 twenty top honors within the SWAC and nationwide, including selection as a finalist for the
14 National Football Foundation's National Scholar Athlete and the National Football
15 Foundation's William V. Campbell Trophy, as well as SWAC All-Academic Team honors
16 and Grambling State University Student Athlete of the Year; and
17 WHEREAS, Grambling State University football team members William Waddell,
18 Jordan Jones, La'Allan Clark, De'Arius Christmas, and Marc Orozco were named to the

1 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) FCS All-American First Team; and
2 WHEREAS, Grambling State University women's soccer team members Haileigh
3 Adams, Kaylee Holt, Kailey Pena, Brittany Terry, Florence David, and Jasmine Smith were
4 named All-SWAC honors players, and Haileigh Adams, Kaylee Holt, Florence David and
5 Kailey Pena received 2018 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Women's
6 Soccer Team honors; and
7 WHEREAS, the exemplary accomplishments of the Grambling Tigers could not have
8 been achieved without the guidance and skill of the coaching staffs, Athletic Director Dr.
9 David Pointon, and President Richard J. Gallot Jr., all of whom demonstrated the kind of
10 leadership, vision, and motivational skills needed to produce leadership and achievement on
11 the courts, on the fields, and in life; and
12 WHEREAS, the members and coaches of the Grambling State University athletic
13 program merit a sincere measure of commendation for their remarkable athletic feats and for
14 the honor they bring to Grambling State University.
15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
16 does hereby commend the members of the Grambling State University Tigers athletic
17 department, Athletic Director, Dr. David Pointon, and President Richard J. Gallot Jr. for
18 their outstanding achievements during the 2018-2019 seasons and for the tremendous pride
19 they bring to the University of Louisiana System, Grambling State University, the
20 community, and the state of Louisiana.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
22 president of Grambling State University.
