VOTING/REGISTRATION: Requests that the governing authority of each public high
school provide for an annual student voter registration drive

2To urge and request the governing authority of each public high school to provide for an
3 annual student voter registration drive.
4 WHEREAS, the participation of citizens in representative democracy and the
5political process is of vital importance to the state of Louisiana; and
6 WHEREAS, many high school students are eligible to register to vote, and a student
7voter registration drive is an opportunity to teach students that voting is both a right and a
8responsibility; and
9 WHEREAS, instruction in civics is a prerequisite to high school graduation, and
10there is perhaps no greater civics lesson come to life than registering to vote at school; and
11 WHEREAS, registering to vote is a significant milestone for a young person and
12paves the way for future civic participation.
13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
14Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the governing authority of each public
15high school to provide for an annual student voter registration drive.
16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution shall be transmitted
17to the executive director of the Louisiana School Boards Association and the executive
18director of the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools, who shall be responsible
19for disseminating it to the members of their associations.
