HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 25

CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences on the death of Michael "Mike" Anthony Barras
1	A RESOLUTION
2To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Michael
3 "Mike" Anthony Barras.
4 WHEREAS, Mike Barras was born on August 25, 1939, to Milton "Red" Barras and
5Pauline Barras; he was raised in St. Martinville, Louisiana, and moved to New Iberia as an
6adult; Mike was a graduate of St. Martinville High School, and after serving in the United
7States Navy for three years, he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the
8University of Louisiana at Lafayette, to study broadcast journalism; and
9 WHEREAS, Mike was a career broadcaster; he served for more than fifty years at
10KLFY TV-10, beginning as a cameraman and eventually moving up to the position of
11general manager; he was a two-time recipient of the Broadcaster of the Year Award, which
12was given by his peers at the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters; and
13 WHEREAS, Mike's memory will live on in the lives of his loving wife of fifty-six
14years, Laurence Ackal Barras; his son Michael, and his wife Annie; his three grandchildren,
15Wyatt, Ian, and Aiden; his brother Chris; his sisters, Renee, and her husband Randy, and
16Linda, and her husband Expadie; and a host of nieces and nephews; and
17 WHEREAS, Mike was a founding member of Iberia Crime Stoppers and served as
18its president for the past five years; he also had a special devotion to those suffering with
19muscular dystrophy; he served as the national vice president for the Muscular Dystrophy
20Association, was a member of the national board of directors for the Muscular Dystrophy

1Association, and for more than thirty years, hosted the local broadcast of the annual
2Muscular Dystrophy Association's Labor Day telethon; and
3 WHEREAS, Mike was immensely dedicated to his profession and to the Acadiana
4community; he was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather; he loved playing
5tennis and duck hunting with his son, and he cherished the time he spent with his
6grandchildren; he will be deeply missed.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
8Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express heartfelt condolences on the death of Michael
9"Mike" Anthony Barras; does hereby recognize his incredible commitment to the Muscular
10Dystrophy Association and to the Acadiana community; and does hereby extend sincere
11hopes and wishes that his family find comfort during their time of loss.
12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
13Laurence Ackal Barras.
