HLS 201ES-254 ORIGINAL 2020 First Extraordinary Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 27 BY REPRESENTATIVE JONES CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences on the death of George Floyd 1 A RESOLUTION 2To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of George Perry 3 Floyd. 4 WHEREAS, it is with great heartache that the citizens of Louisiana have learned of 5the unnecessary death of George Perry Floyd; and 6 WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd was born on October 14, 1973, in Fayetteville, North 7Carolina, to George Perry and Larcenia "Cissy" Floyd; he was raised in Cuney Homes in the 8Third Ward of Houston, Texas; 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd attended Yates High School, where he was an exceptional 10athlete who excelled as a tight end on the school's football team; he even helped lead the 11team to the Texas state championships in 1992; after graduating from high school in 1993, 12Floyd attended South Florida Community College, now South Florida State College, on a 13football athletic scholarship; he also attended Texas A&M-Kingsville; and 14 WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd returned to Houston in 1995 to work at an automotive shop 15and play club basketball; in 2014, he moved to Minneapolis to work as a truck driver and a 16security guard; during this time, Mr. Floyd created a short film condemning gun violence; 17and 18 WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd's death has sparked national protests condemning the use of 19excessive force by police officers and opened a dialogue concerning the prevalence of racial 20discrimination in the United States and the apparent lack of police accountability; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 201ES-254 ORIGINAL HR NO. 27 1 WHEREAS, in the comforting sentiments of Mr. Floyd's youngest daughter, Gianna 2Floyd, his death has "changed the world", and the House of Representatives shares her hope 3that this loss will result in a better, more just, and more equal United States of America. 4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 5Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express heartfelt condolences on the death of George 6Perry Floyd; does hereby recognize the impact of George Floyd's death has had on 7conversations concerning racial inequalities in our country; and does hereby express sincere 8hope that Mr. Floyd's death sparks positive change in the United States and that his family, 9friends, and loved ones find comfort in knowing that his memory will live on forever in the 10hearts and minds of all Americans. 11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 12George Floyd's daughter, Gianna Floyd.
