COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr., and the Hammond Police
Department for their response to the events at the Hammond Square shopping center
on June 5, 2020
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr., and the Hammond Police Department for their
3 response to the events at the Hammond Square shopping center on June 5, 2020.
4 WHEREAS, on June 5, 2020, chaos erupted at the Hammond Square shopping center
5in Hammond when a man crashed a vehicle through the front of the store, dropped what
6appeared to be an explosive device, walked through the store threatening patrons, and then
7attempted to carjack someone in the parking lot; and
8 WHEREAS, the chaos sparked panic and rumors; the situation was dangerous and
9potentially fatal for anyone in the area; and
10 WHEREAS, thanks to the coordinated and professional response of law enforcement
11agencies, a situation with great potential for escalation was quickly brought under control:
12the area was secured and evacuated and the assailant was apprehended with no gun shots
13being fired and only one person receiving minor injuries; and
14 WHEREAS, critical to this heroic and effective response were the men and women
15of the Hammond Police Department and the stellar leadership of Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr.;
16and
17 WHEREAS, Chief Bergeron and his department rapidly asserted their control of a
18very threatening situation that could have resulted in numerous casualties and worked
19diligently and quickly to mitigate fears and restore order; within a few hours the department

1was collecting evidence from the scene and providing for the recovery of personal
2automobiles from the shopping center parking lot; and
3 WHEREAS, Chief Bergeron and the Hammond Police Department are most
4deserving of the utmost respect for their bravery and professionalism; the citizens of
5Louisiana are very fortunate to have such dedicated officers protecting us at such times.
6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
7Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr., and the
8Hammond Police Department for their response to the events at the Hammond Square
9shopping center on June 5, 2020, and does hereby record for posterity the exemplary
10professionalism and heroics displayed by the men and women of the department.
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Chief
12Edwin Bergeron, Jr. and members of the Hammond Police Department.
