HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 54
BY REPRESENTATIVE JENKINS
A RESOLUTION
To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Macura
Hamilton.
WHEREAS, the members of the House of Representatives were saddened to learn
of the departure of Macura Hamilton from this earthly realm on June 17, 2020, at the age of
eighty-five; and
WHEREAS, Macura Hamilton was born on October 8, 1934, the third of twelve
children born to Lonnie and Ella Dee Moore Hamilton; Macura came to know Jesus Christ
as his Lord and Savior at an early age, baptized by the Reverend A.H. Holland at Mt. Olive
Baptist Church in Greenwood, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, his formative years in Rodessa, Louisiana, were shaped by respect for
his parents, love of family, hard work, and self-reliance; Macura chopped and picked cotton
to earn money for his education; he graduated in 1953 from Booker T. Washington High
School in Caddo Parish and was the first in his family to receive a secondary education
degree; Macura Hamilton graduated in 1958 from Southern University in Baton Rouge with
a bachelor of science degree in music education, and he earned a master of arts degree in
education from Columbia University in New York in 1966; Mr. Hamilton was certified in
Louisiana as a licensed professional counselor; and
WHEREAS, Macura Hamilton answered the call of duty to his country and served
in the U.S. Army as a chaplain's assistant and in the active reserve; and
WHEREAS, upon discharge from the military, Mr. Hamilton taught in his native
Caddo Parish for nearly four decades; he retired after serving thirty of those years as a
guidance counselor; and

WHEREAS, Macura Hamilton used his talents to share sacred music in the religious
sphere of Caddo Parish; he was a musician at St. Rest Baptist Church, which he joined in
1969 and served faithfully as music director and organist for more than fifty years; Brother
Hamilton introduced classical music, cantatas, operettas, and anthems to the St. Rest
congregation and other venues where he played; he celebrated the rich heritage of spirituals
and gospel music and was recognized as a musical giant in the community; and
WHEREAS, Brother Hamilton's spiritual service at St. Rest Baptist Church extended
to the deacon ministry, where he was chairman; to the finance committee, where he was
assistant finance chairman; and to the trustee board; and
WHEREAS, the indelible imprint Macura Hamilton made on the lives of many will
be felt for years to come but his presence will be missed most by those closest to him; his
wife of fifty-four years, Delia Monroe Hamilton; his daughters, Felicia Hamilton and
Dr. Kimberly Hamilton-Wims, and her husband Alfred, Jr.; his brothers, the Reverend
Lonnie Hamilton, Jr., and Robert Hamilton, and his wife Beverly; his sisters, Ella Hamilton
Dixson, Maxine Hamilton Webb, Elizabeth Hamilton, Molly Hamilton Guy, Dr. Patsy
Hamilton Solomon, and her husband Alphonsa, and Bobbie Hamilton Poindexter, and her
husband Rene; and the many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who remember good
times shared with Macura Hamilton.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend deepest sympathies to the family and friends
of Macura Hamilton upon his passing; does hereby acknowledge the positive impact he
made in the school and religious communities of Caddo Parish; and does hereby offer best
thoughts and prayers for peace and comfort to those who mourn.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
family of Macura Hamilton.
