SLS 201ES-217 ORIGINAL 2020 First Extraordinary Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 21 BY SENATORS ROBERT MILLS AND PEACOCK COMMENDATIONS. Commends Benton High School Lady Tigers girls basketball team on winning the Class 5A state championship. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend the Lady Tigers of Benton High School in Benton, Louisiana, upon winning 3 the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's (LHSAA) Class 5A girls basketball 4 state championship. 5 WHEREAS, the team was led by high scoring duo, Jada Anderson and Qua 6 Chambers, who combined for fifty-five of the team's sixty-two point total and their 62-48 7 win; and 8 WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers defeated Ouachita after falling short in the 9 championship game a year ago, a bitter loss and one which they were reminded of every day 10 as the walk to the gym passes the trophy case with the runner-up trophy for 2019; and 11 WHEREAS, Benton's Lady Tigers' coach, Mary Ward, said she believed that the 12 daily reminder of falling short last year put a chip on the girls' shoulders that fueled their 13 drive to succeed in this year's championship game; and 14 WHEREAS, this is the Lady Tigers' first basketball state championship in school 15 history and came as the school competed at the 5A level for the first time; and 16 WHEREAS, in the post season, the Lady Tigers won their five playoff games by an 17 average of 25.6 points per game, a staggering accomplishment; and 18 WHEREAS, individual honors went to senior guard Qua Chambers, who was named Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 21 SLS 201ES-217 ORIGINAL 1 to the first team All-State and to junior guard, Jada Anderson, who was named to the second 2 team All-State and Most Outstanding Player of the championship game; and 3 WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers excelled in the game in every aspect; they scored 21 4 of 31 attempts from the free-throw line and their run and jump defensive scheme helped 5 them go on several scoring runs, putting the game out of reach of their opponents; and 6 WHEREAS, whatever the motivation, the Benton High School Lady Tigers 7 conquered every foe in the postseason in order to bring home the Lady Tigers' first state 8 basketball championship to their cheering classmates and loyal fans. 9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 10 commend the Lady Tigers of Benton High School in Benton, Louisiana, upon winning their 11 first basketball state championship. 12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 13 Coach Mary Ward of Benton High School.
