Commends the Elvin Howard, Sr. Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Foundation on its commitment to ensuring that the citizens of Louisiana are informed and aware of the issues specifically associated with pancreatic cancer. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend the Elvin Howard, Sr. Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Foundation on its 3 commitment to fighting pancreatic cancer through raising resources, awareness, and 4 advocating for those diagnosed with this deadly disease. 5 WHEREAS, the foundation was founded on October 28, 2016, in memory of Elvin 6 Howard Sr., a lifelong resident of Louisiana, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer on 7 September 6, 2008; and 8 WHEREAS, after his death, Mr. Howard's wife, Bertha, established the foundation 9 to honor her husband by increasing awareness of the disease, supporting research, and 10 providing overall advocacy and support to pancreatic cancer survivors, their families, and 11 caregivers; and 12 WHEREAS, the vision of the Elvin Howard, Sr. Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy 13 Foundation is that negative social determinants of health will never be an obstacle to the 14 early diagnosis, treatment, and cure of pancreatic cancer; and 15 WHEREAS, the mission of the Elvin Howard, Sr. Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy 16 Foundation is to reduce pancreatic cancer deaths and family hardships through awareness, 17 advocacy, and support; and 18 WHEREAS, the values of the Elvin Howard, Sr. Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 41 SLS 202ES-649 ORIGINAL 1 Foundation are those of Mr. Howard's: faith, family, generosity, love for others, enjoyment 2 of life, and end of life preparation; and 3 WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer related deaths in 4 the United States and has a five-year survival rate of approximately eight percent; and 5 WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is a very aggressive cancer with no specific, 6 cost-effective screening that can easily and reliably find early-stage pancreatic cancer in 7 people who have no symptoms; and 8 WHEREAS, the cause of most cases is unknown, thereby limiting treatment options; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and November 19, 11 2020, is World Pancreatic Cancer Day throughout the United States and the World; 12 established to bring attention and awareness about the symptoms and risks of the disease, 13 to highlight the urgent need for earlier detection, and make progress to help patients fight 14 and survive this deadly disease; and 15 WHEREAS, the foundation does play an instrumental and vital role in increasing 16 public awareness and understanding of pancreatic cancer throughout Louisiana. 17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 18 does hereby commend the Elvin Howard, Sr. Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Foundation on 19 its commitment to ensuring the citizens of Louisiana are informed and aware of the issues 20 specifically associated with pancreatic cancer. 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 22 Elvin Howard, Sr. Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Foundation.
