HOUSE BILL NO. 320

BOARDS/COMMISSIONS:  Provides relative to the composition of the La. State Board of
Nursing
1	AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 37:914(B)(1) and 917, relative to the Louisiana State Board of
3 Nursing; to provide for the appointment of members to the board; to provide for the
4 composition of the board; and to provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1.  R.S. 37:914(B)(1) and 917 are hereby amended and reenacted to read as
7follows: 
8 §914.  Louisiana State Board of Nursing; appointment of members; term of office;
9	vacancy; officers; compensation

11	B.(1)  The board shall be composed of eight registered nurses appointed by
12 the governor from a list of names submitted by the Louisiana State Nurses
13 Association, two registered nurses appointed by the governor from a list of names
14 submitted by the Louisiana Hospital Association, one certified registered nurse
15 anesthetist appointed by the governor from a list of names submitted by the
16 Louisiana Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Ltd., and two representatives of the
17 consumers of Louisiana from the state at-large appointed by the governor, neither of
18 whom shall be a nurse.  Each board member shall possess all of the applicable
19 qualifications provided in R.S. 37:916.

1 §917.  Composition of board
2	The board shall be composed of two members who are nursing service
3 administrators; three members who are nurse educators, one of whom is a
4 representative of an associate degree program in nursing, if such a representative
5 applies to be and is submitted as a candidate for board membership in accordance
6 with the provisions of R.S. 37:914(B); three five members who are in other areas of
7 nursing practice, one of whom is an advanced practice registered nurse and one of
8 whom is a representative of a rural hospital; and one certified registered nurse
9 anesthetist.  In addition, there shall be two consumer members of the board as
10 provided in R.S. 37:914(B).

Abstract: Adds appointments to the composition of the La. State Board of Nursing. 
Present law provides that the La. State Board of Nursing shall be composed of eight
registered nurses appointed by the governor from a list of names submitted by the La. State
Nurses Association, one certified registered nurse anesthetist appointed by the governor from
a list of names submitted by the La. Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Ltd., and two
representatives of the consumers of Louisiana from the state at-large appointed by the
governor, neither of whom shall be a nurse.
Proposed law revises the composition of the board by adding two registered nurses who shall
be appointed by the governor from a list of names given by the La. Hospital Association.
Present law provides that the La. State Board of Nursing shall be composed of two members
who are nursing service administrators; three members who are nurse educators, one of
whom is a representative of an associate degree program in nursing, if such a representative
applies to be and is submitted as a candidate for board membership in accordance with
present law; three members who are in other areas of nursing practice, one of whom is an
advanced practice registered nurse; and one certified registered nurse; and one certified
registered nurse anesthetist. Further provides that there shall be two consumer members of
the board as provided for in present law. 
Proposed law increases the members who are in other areas of nursing practice from three
to five. Further provides that one representative shall be from a rural hospital.
